iphone 4 iOS 5 pics black in iPhoto but ok in Preview

Several of my recent photo's show up pure black in iphoto after import. The pics look fine in thumbnails of import window, but after import, they are black.

Pictures look fine on iphone.

I have imported the same exact pictures via Preview and they look great. Saved them in a folder and looked at the resulting high resolution picture without issue.

I did the normal stuff to repair iphoto database, repair permissions, etc.

I created a new iphoto database and imported...same issue.

I have been through many of the previous discussions, but none are exactly matching my description of being able to import via Preview ok and into a new library without issue.

Using iphone 4 with ios 5.0.1, mac mini with lion 10.7.2.

Thanks,

Phil

Sent black photos to iPhoto trash, emptied trash to eliminate photo file from my computer. Rebuilding library did not bring back any photos. After I rebooted, then rebuilt, I plugged my iPhone back in and uploaded all my photos again except for the duplicates that were already not black. If you don't have the originals on your phone still, I don't know how you could go about fixing the current black photos of which you don't have the originals for. Hope that helps.

No problem, mnsuk.

I was not using photostream at the time I was having my problems,so I cannot comment on any similiarities.

My issue was very consistent of only effecting portrait pictures, not landscape. I don't recally any issues with movies. Also, I was able to import the same pictures into preview and I didn't see any of the black pictures that import to iphoto showed.

With my issue, I was betting that rebuilding with all boxes checked was NOT going to make a difference, as I even created a new library and had the same problem. However, Terrence proved me wrong and it worked! My guess is that checking all the boxes changes something deep in the system that fixes the issue.

I hope the same works out for you!

I'm not the most technical of person but I have found an easier work around than removing from the iphoto folder or rotating the image but unfortunately not a solution.

I only have the black image problem for portrait shots and am running OSX 10.7.4 and iPhoto 9.3. I shoot RAW (nef as I am a Nikon Man) and all I done was highlight the black thumbnails select photo>reprocess raw (I guess this will work for JPEGs and revert to original).

Still looking for a full solution and hope this helps for now.

"Reprocess Raw" is not available as an option when I look in the "Photos" menu-probably because I'm not using RAW format. The "Revert to Original" option is under the "Edit" button, but only becomes available once the picture has been edited, which (whether using "Adjust" or rotating the photo) is what we have been doing to get rid of the black thumbnails.

The oddest thing we've found is that this is only occurring on my wife's Macbook AIR and not on my Macbook Pro - despite the fact that we're sharing all the same photos.

So theres still no fix for this? Mine started out with the odd photo here and there black (thumbs and photos), rotating would fix it (pita), I'm now noticing its happening too at least 2/3 of my imported photos and its really bugging me, thats ln landscape and portrait equally.

I'm trying picasa out for a while as i cant afford to stuff around with iphoto any longer.

Definitely an iphoto problem, picasa is fine.

What you did was create a modified version of the photo. If you do a Resort to Original I believe it will revert back to the blank window. Give it a try on one of them. You can still use that method but just realize you're working with a modified version from then on and can lose if if you do use the Revert to Original feature on it.
