I heard lion is good ..what is the issue..?

Personally, I didn't have very many “problems” with lion, I switched back to Snow Leopard because I felt lion was “dumbed down” and features were removed that I need to use.

For us it was Versions cannot be switched off (decreases security). No "Save As" in many Apps, no Bounce in Mail. 10.7 felt “dumbed down” to us. We will try later, (10.8 maybe).

Apple is taking ages to update the macpro.. even so to the point that there's a ton of speculation that the line is going to be discontinued.

For me, I love my MP. It's the best computer I've ever owned but that being said, I'm on the brink of going back to PC due to the lack of updates from apple and their tendency to turn their backs on pro users as of late.

It's true that the video card is key in 3D graphics and depending on the sophitication of your 3D scene processors are key also when it comes to rendering.

What app do you plan on using for 3D? Keep in mind that there's a bit more 3D options in a PC over a mac. Maya is still a bit unstable from my expierence and 3DS is not really an option unless you use bootcamp with windows and that can be a headache if you need to switch between the two. (a virtual machine is not really an option since it will steal resources that you need while working in 3D).

Plus another benifit of a PC is that you can buy a totally badass system for half the cost. You could probably buy a pretty effective 3D workdstaction and have a little money left over a macbook air or pro. This is what I would recommend.

You and I probably agree that OSX is a much cleaner OS over that fugly windows interface but the reality is that the 3D community favors the PC market over Macs.

I looked at the refurbished systems on apple.com and they would be much bettern than buying new. However, for some reason apple has the base model on Amazon for $400 buck less? http://amzn.to/vZSNi4 I don't know why, but that may best price out there. You can still add apple care too, so it the main difference is whether you want to carry the box home, or sit on the couch and have UPS bring it to you. : )

I don't think that waiting for updates is worth it. This computer can handle almost anything you throw at it, so unless you have to have the latest and greatest for braggin rights, I think the latest model won't be outdated just yet. We have several of these are work and they are BEASTS!

Are you using it for business? Apple has a leasing option which may suit your needs until the new version comes out. I share your concern as well about the future of the Mac Pro but the good news is that there is no news. Apple usually doesn't wait this long to announce and end of life to one of it's products. It's very possible that they were waiting for the right parts and possibly the release of Mountail Lion. True, Suitabe processors came out quite a few weeks ago but I think a suitble thunderbolt option was just made available for the Mac Pro..

I would say if there's no word about the Mac Pro by the time Mountain Lion is realesed it may be worth considering other options in the future.

I do pro graphics work in the Action Sports industry on a 2007 mac pro 8-Core and it's still going strong.. sure I would like it to be faster but it's still not too bad!

That is a really good point. If you lease it, this year's lease cost is a business expense THIS YEAR.

If you buy it, you have to capitalize that cost and depreciate it over its useful life, likely five years or more. (You spend all the money this year, but have to recapture the cost over five or more years.)

While the i7-3000 series have not looked all that good, spent time reading about the ES Xeon which does like a really well deserved workstation and server processor for video, rendering, graphics and other tasks.
