If you have 8 DIMM slots you are fine, you can put 6 x 16GB. Everyone does their own memory upgrades, it is something designed for the end user to do. And Apple Store prices are based on 2010 price and rediculously high - DDR3 has dropped a huge amount.

The 2008 and later though can benefit hugely with a GTX 570 if you are in the right field.

The 2010 can be outfitted with a pair of X5690x or 5680s too. All without having to sell and buy a new system.

Some configurations are of course Build To Order.

I assume you can read through the articles and information on MPG. It is Mac. Plain and simple. Pre-assembled and tested, and BTO processors. Processors are all Intel Xeon and same as Apple though MPG offers a 12-core 3.33GHz option that Apple does not - the highest Intel offers but why not Apple? short-sighted I guess and taking away choice and option.

http://www.macsales.com/memory/macpro - shippng from USA to where you are with the added costs may or may not be as good as buying from Europe and Kingston Memory or elsewhere.

24 Gigs is a nice softspot for 3D work... BTW, I hate to admit it but Maya is horrible on the mac. it's so buggy, the UI has a hard time responding to commands and it's just arghhh!. I've seen pro Maya users get all excited about working on mac only to switch back to PC. I actually run a seprate PC to do Maya work if the project is fairly large. Sometimes I go ahead and just do it on my MP but I cringe everytime when I think about opening it up.
