Rachel,

Locate the document file in Finder. With a Finder window in List view, click once on the line of your document file, then click again directly on the Filename. The name will be selected, ready to edit. After typing a new name, hit Return and you're done. If your document is open in Pages at the time, the name of the active document window will change to match the new name in Finder.

Rachel,

While Jerry's explanation above is correct, I thought I might add a couple points.

  • You don't have to be in List view.
  • In the Finder, if you select a file and then hit the Return key it selects the name for editing. I use Column view almost all the time and this works more reliably for me than click – pause – click which is somewhat sensitive to timing. (Jerry's method in List view probably avoids the timing issue.)
  • If you want to get here from Pages, open the Document pane of the inspector, and the info tab. The "Show File Info" button will open the Finder's "Get Info" window for the document. In the box under (appropriately) Name and Extension, you can also edit the name.

Jerry,

I think I tried Cover Flow once, to look through a folder of images, but I didn't even like it for that.

I actually did say, in my first reply, that I almost always use Column view. I realize list view presents a lot more information, but since I am mostly just drilling up and down through the folder heirarchy, that's mostly noise to me, and I feel more comfortable with just the file names.

Argh..., you did say, and I missed it. Sorry.

I don't know if I can remember why, but shortly after my eyes were opened to the variety of ways to use Finder, I tried the different views and settled on List. I think it may have had to do with the width of the display (number of columns required) on files in burried folders. What is a clean and efficient presentation to one user may be clutter to another, I guess.

The preview in Column View is nice, and I do use it at times. I get a lot of mileage out of Quick Look, giving the Spacebar a workout, and it works great in List View where you can turn Quick Look on and then arrow down the list seeing large format previews as you go.

Thanks for the comments.
