caps lock key does not work well.... 75% of the time it doesn't click on.

It seems Apple developers did this purposely.

I seem to get more typos now too (missing letters that I know I typed in)

I'm going to try this Martin. Thanks!

(I'm the original poster of this discussion, (more than 1-1/2 years ago!)

& have all but given up.

... cursing Apple's stupidity & all the days it has cost me constant miniscule amts of productivity!

PLUS Apple's stupidity of not giving us a (preference) fix by now.

Hope it works, after I find time to install 😉

You can'ty help wondering what sort of nerd at Apple decided that something which has worked fine for 25 years suddenly needs changing?!

What sort of mind thinks it would be a good idea to change the operation of the Caps Lock key to suit people who don't use the Caps Lock key rather than for people who do use the Caps Lock key?!

It's a funny old world!

oKAY!! this is working for me. Since January 2012, when I 1st started this discussion, finally a solution that works. Thanks Martin !

Initially (before starting the discussion, I had even (several months earlier, after 1st purchasing my MBPro) gone to the Genius bar,
and they even replaced my new computer, but couldn't give a solution. SO LAME.

I hope this holds, as

I'm pretty happy bout it 😉

?Question? Martin:

When installing the 2 softwares, notes came up that newer versions were available.
I clicked r"emind me later" ... will I need to update, or are these sufficient for this?

Also, I have noticed that with this MBPro I'd been getting more typos (which I swear I'd not made)

.... anyone else?

BEST!

Yeah when I originally blogged this solution last year those were the current versions, there may well be newer releases available now. I'm guessing the later versions can only be more compatible with later operating systems so no harm in updating. I did post this answer here with a link to my blog but the moderators decided that I was self-promoting so took it down. It was only when I started getting notifications through again that I thought i'd try copying and pasting the complete blog entry here.

Glad it helped - it's still working for me 8 months later so it certainly does hold.

Hey, thanks for supplying a more permanent solution. I personally don't like keyboard hack software (too many bugs encountered while making my old computers more Colemak-friendly), but I'm glad that there exists a way that most people will consider to be acceptable.

I've begun to program and work in Terminal/Emacs much more often nowadays, so I've switched my Control and Caps Lock keys anyway, making this a non-issue. For anyone who uses the Control key more than the Caps Lock key, I highly recommend the switch.

This worked for me too. I did not have to estart the computer or exit out of sys pref in order for it to work either. It is funny that this seems to be a software bug, as i have talked to several Apple reps and they have wanted me to ake an appointment at my nearest Apple stroe wich is over an hour away and bring it in. I noticed this issue right off the bat, but chocked it up to being new to the platform. I am just happy i dont have to bring in my MacBook for repair because i am in school and cant go without it. Thanks for the help!!!!

I have been angry about this too.

And I've been using mac keyboard before actually using a mac and I can say I got this problem on my windows computer too, using apple keyboard.

In fact, I got used to press caps lock several times while keep an eye on it to see if the lights are on.

Some time ago I had to rehabilitate my computer to use netBanking because I typed 3 times wrong password (lack of caps), so it's a big hassle.

I'm glad I found the solution here, and, until now its working.

PS: I had this problem either on my macair built in keyboard, as well in the external USB apple keyboard. As I stated im my response, I also had this problem in my Windows PC, with apple keyboard, so it's weird that tweaking System Preferences can solve the problem. Later I'll try using it on the PC to see if the problem remains.

Yes! This terrible feature! I HATE IT!!! I think Apple did this purposely: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1192

I always forgot there does not really exist a caps lock on mac and tried to press it. So 2 seconds after I saw a lot of typos and then spent long time carefully deleting them, and, I fogot what I was doing! I hope Apple allow us turn off this terrible feature, even by a terminal command.

My caps lock key does not work properly, but only on a few letters, and only when trying to use my credit card online. I understand how bizzarre that sounds but the letters WXS wxs, work fine everywhere else, but on Amazon they cannot be made in to caps. On my credit card my name JAMES, is written in all caps. They won't except payment using the spelling James, since I can't cap the S. Does anyone know whats going? The letters not working from top to bottom WSX make it seem as if I damaged the keyboard, but since I can use caps everywhere else, could it be a virus trying to infiltrate my account? This is very frustrating. Any help greatly appreciated
