"Please: what nonsense.

I have an office in London and one in Chicago, I fly weekly. And I leave the Mac (s) asleep always. Going on 10 years now without chiming (except for an occasional OS X upgrade) ..."

Not been past here for a while, but noticed I never replied. Often a mistake to assume one's own experience is the norm - if you had sat next to me on a 1980s Concorde you would not have guessed your neighbor was bumming round the world's 5-dollar-a-night hostels by couriering documents. I carry various laptops used by other people and do not know the sleep settings for every version of every OS so I always shut down for take-off and landing. A laptop can reach combustion temperature by waking on LAN, alarm, timer or whatever inside a bag. Also some safety announcements still include "... shut down (not hibernate) all (not some) electronic devices (so laptops) until (whenever permitted) ...", and if that's what the crew thinks necessary I'm happy to comply.

"Until there is a question it is hard to frame a reply."

Not necessarily; in this context 'reply' is a term used for any response to a post, hence:

So you have just 'replied' yourself without there being a question. As did I. Just about to click the "Reply" button now ...

This needs to be fixed by Apple. Holding down the mute key while starting up should always be a way to avoid the startup chime for all Macs. You might be in a hostile, life-or-death situation and wish to turn on your Mac without attracting unwanted attention, or simply do not wish to wake up your roommate.

"Holding down the mute key while starting up should always be a way to avoid the startup chime for all Macs".

This appears to work for many Macs, however how about having a silent chime with an optional keypress to hear it when required? If the chime is so important, as earlier posters have pointed out, how come it is not audible when booting if you happen to have shut down while using the device with the volume muted? Funky cartoon icons and satinised aluminium do not compensate for intrusive noises and eyesores (that obligatory lit-up apple on the lid). Preoccupation with form at the expense of function is the hallmark of incompetent design.

THANKYOU!!

As you seem like a person with resources can you suggest a good site for tips and tricks?

I am new to Macbooks and the reason i actually changed from MS was because Apple make the BEST touchpads! However I am mostly enjoying the Mac experience.

Can you suggest any "must have" utilities?

Thanks again. Most helpful

I only mind the chime when I need to start to silently. I'm not so tech savvy so all the script writing is not for me and I've tried holding down the mute button and putting in headphones with no luck.

What I did this morning was to turn on my computer and then I immediately put down the screen it before it had a chance to chime and then opened it again 3 seconds later. It worked and my son is still sleeping 🙂. While its not the ideal solution, for the few times I need to start up silently this should work.
