HOW TO SYNC YOUR RINGTONES TO THE iPHONE

1. Open iTunes and make sure that your iPhone is connected to your computer.

2. Click on DEVICES -> APPS -> scroll down to FILE SHARING -> highlight the tones you wish to sync -> click on the SAVE TO button at the bottom and save this, for easy access, to a file (maybe title it My Ringtones) on your desktop.

3. Go back to LIBRARY -> and drag your tones, from your desktop file, to the (bell icon) TONES (this took the place of the RINGTONES tab under DEVICES -> APPS, if you are not showing this icon then go to EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> GENERAL tab and make sure that the TONES box is checked).

4. Click on the arrow just left of the name of your device. You will see a list of folders.

5. Drag your ringtones to the (bell icon) TONES.

6. Check on your iPhone -> Settings -> Sounds and the new ringtones should be at the top.

Okay, so, I figured out how to copy them over (although I'd still like to be able to organize ringtones on the phone into folders). I connected the phone to the computer, after which iTunes started. I clicked the Device icon in iTunes, to select the phone, and then clicked on Tones under "On My Device" in the left-hand menu.

I then opened an Explorer window on the PC, containing some ringtones (.m4r files), selected some, and dragged them into the Tones area in iTunes. At first they indicted they would only be linked, but then copied over to the phone.

To clarify why you can not drag the tones to your phone. Might be because you havent gone into your iphone settings and between Apps and Music you will see Tones. Click on Tones and Click sync. Now your Tones will Sync to your phone! 🙂

Enjoy!

Be sure to

Go to Edit>Preferences>General Tab> click tones. Now go back to itunes and on the top left hand side under Library you should see a symbol of a bell (labeled tones). If you don't have this, its not going to work.

Thanks sunviews for laying that out for all of us!

To put ringtones in your device(iphone) first of all you need "ringtone maker application" in your device, make ringtone with the help of that application, then connect your device with mac/pc,open itunes in your mac/pc,after synchronizing device will appear in itunes, click your device and go to "apps" ( SUMMARY>INFO>APPS ) scroll down and then you will find "FILE SHARING" ,click on your "ringtone maker application" then you will find in the right hand side box "ringtone" made by you, drag that ringtone n paste on your desktop, then click "done" . On the left hand upper side you will see music icon ( i guess its by default ), click on that music icon then u will see some more icons, click on "tones" icon ,drag ringtone from your desktop to "tones",then again open your device in itunes and go to "tones" (SUMMARY>INFO>APPS>TONES) n then syc your device.

enjoy

Why do people keep listing the same steps that have been posted like 10 times already? We get it the steps have already been given. You repeating them in a less comprehensive way isn't going to fix peoples issue all of the sudden. We are doing the steps correctly they just plainly are not syncing. These steps worked fine before updating to Itunes 11 and ios6. Now they do not. I've done this dozens of times. But after the update it just doesn't work. If you have updated to Itunes 11 and ios6 and have figured out how to do it then please share how. But please don't list the same steps again. Just say what you did differen't or if you used the exact same steps and had success but don't or do know why.

The main issue here is simply doing the Edit Preferences > General Tab > Tones was not enough to get the files to transfer. Not sure why they were trying to emphasize that step, as the Tones checkbox was a default selection on my version of iTunes (11.0.1), but perhaps it wasn't that way on previous versions. I was trying to drag tones from my Library Tones folder into my iPhone Tones folder and nothing was happening.

The step that's missing in the OP's instructions is once your iPhone is connected to your computer and you see the Device list in your iTunes sidebar, you click on the device, then you should see some subtabs on the screen, one of which is Tones. Click on that, and then there will be two options -- to sync all tones or only sync selected tones. I didn't try Sync All, but Selected Sync worked. Hope this helps.

I have read thru all the replies and did not see the same issue(s) as I'm experiencing. I have downloaded 6 ringtones (all .m4r format) on my Windows pc. I clicked and dragged it to "tones" in iTunes. 3 tones was successfully copied but the other 3 won't copy. When I tried copying the 3 that won't transfer/copy, I keep getting an icon with an arrow and with a "link" label but won't copy.

Copying and/or moving the 3 tones to my music library did not do the trick also. I would get the same icon with arrow and link label everytime I try moving it.

Also, when I try to play the 3 tones that won't copy on my pc, iTunes would open but will not play the sound. But if I try to play the 3 that were copied/moved it would play the tones. I can also play .mpeg formats with iTunes but not the 3 that won't copy or move!

I have iTunes 11. Hope somebody can help. Thanks much!
