HOW TO SYNC YOUR RINGTONES TO THE iPHONE

1. Open iTunes and make sure that your iPhone is connected to your computer.

2. Click on DEVICES -> APPS -> scroll down to FILE SHARING -> highlight the tones you wish to sync -> click on the SAVE TO button at the bottom and save this, for easy access, to a file (maybe title it My Ringtones) on your desktop.

3. Go back to LIBRARY -> and drag your tones, from your desktop file, to the (bell icon) TONES (this took the place of the RINGTONES tab under DEVICES -> APPS, if you are not showing this icon then go to EDIT -> PREFERENCES -> GENERAL tab and make sure that the TONES box is checked).

4. Click on the arrow just left of the name of your device. You will see a list of folders.

5. Drag your ringtones to the (bell icon) TONES.

6. Check on your iPhone -> Settings -> Sounds and the new ringtones should be at the top.

Okay, so, I figured out how to copy them over (although I'd still like to be able to organize ringtones on the phone into folders). I connected the phone to the computer, after which iTunes started. I clicked the Device icon in iTunes, to select the phone, and then clicked on Tones under "On My Device" in the left-hand menu.

I then opened an Explorer window on the PC, containing some ringtones (.m4r files), selected some, and dragged them into the Tones area in iTunes. At first they indicted they would only be linked, but then copied over to the phone.

I was able to use the info here to add ring tones. I created the tones with a free app. Downloaded them to my desk top by going into the APPs section of iTunes and dragging them out after clicking on the app and saving them on my hard drive. Then I imported them into iTunes, made sure my synch of tones was turned on, hit synch and voila...

Good luck

I've had the same problem as you several times in the past, have followed all the prescribed steps, but the sync of the missing ringtone didn't happen. However, here's what worked for me today.

(1) I opened the Tones folder of iTunes.

(2) The iPhone's icon was on the right of the thick tool-bar, next to iTunes Store.

(3) I held down the mouse's left-click on the ringtone I wanted to transfer, and dragged it to the iPhone's icon.

(4) The iPhone uploaded the file.

I'll try to remember this for the next time as, sure as fate, it will happen again.

You see, I do every single step correctly. I have the tones tab, and I have ringtone files in a folder on my desktop. But it's when I drag it over to the Tones library does it highlight the outline with 'link' beneath it... and when I drop it nothing happens. Nothing. No files are imported, no files magically appear like they do in the tutorials.

But another thing is, it only did it once earlier with an identical file I'm trying to do now. It's frustrating and I have spent an entire day trying to figure this out. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong or why the heck this is happening so I can fix it and get on with my life.

1st - To see them> look at iphone> settings> Sounds> Ringstones. They should be there ...all that you transferred.

2nd - Did you check "Tones Box" ? If not, it won't work.

3rd - Is the music your doing this with one you bought from itunes or a cd you downloaded from an original cd? If the music is one from a shared site like Limewire Pro or the likes of then this might be your problem.

.: I read a number of these posts, and my not-that-techie brain exploded. So I did a fast app search in the App store, and found Easy Ringtone Creator. Cost me all of $0.99. A complete no-brainer - you upload the song(s) you want to use, tell the app how many seconds of the song you want, and where you want it to start, and it creates the Ringtone. Synch with your iPhone 5 and life is sweet.

i have been working on this for a few hours and what i was doing wrong was the file name.. even when i drug it into i tunes it showed it as an mp4r but when i checked the actual file name in finder from my desk top it still had the mp4a after the mp4r i just deleted the mp4a part and drug the ringtones into my tones (the image of the bell) in the main library then when i switch to my devise there is now a tones tab at the top where summery, info ect are at.. click the tones tab and now you can sync

FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE HAVING TROUBLE GETTING RINGTONES - "TONES" SYNCHRONIZING TO IPHONE 5, THIS WAY MIGHT BE HELPFUL..!!

I tried almost for a day and figured out it was quite easy.. So here I go..

Do not connect your Iphone 5 yet..

Use itunes or any other software to convert your .mp3 to .m4r (Using itunes >11 you can add the file (Ctr+) to select multiple files to library. Once it shows up in the MUSIC, rt click and get info - to enter all the information if not actually present. Now go to options.. and limit to 30sec. Now rt click on the same file and creat an AAC version. Now rt click on the AAC version new file - Show in Windows Explorer. In that window change the extension to .m4r from .m4a. If using Win 7 or 8, hit ALT and go to tools to uncheck for hide folder extensions. This way you can actually change the extension of the .m4a file. Keep this folder open.

Now comes the actual trick. Copy all the .m4r files to a separate folder in desktop or wherever you wish.

Now delete all the MUSIC files including mp3 and other extension music files (You can sync your music files later and dont have to worry about that as far as you have a copy of these in a different folder).

Now make sure you get the tones folder from the preferences as people have mentioned before. Also in summary-sync selected file and folders

Connect your Iphone 5 by USB and open itunes-rt click-run as administrator

Once it opens up, it should have the TONES folder under your Iphone. You can change View-Show sidebar or not depending on your preferences. Also Authorize your computer as it might ran into problems.

Now click on the TONES and it may not have any TONES there. Now go to add file to library and add the formatted .m4r files (Ctrl+A - select all) and add. It should now appear in the TONES folder under your Iphone. Select SYNC TONES - ALL and sync (by hitting on the bottom SYNC button).

Without disconnecting just go to settings-ringtones- xxxxxxxx and here you should be able to select all the ringtones added to your Iphone.

You can also eject your Iphone 5 and connect a different Iphone to actually just sync only tones.

Similarly you can now add all your music files to itunes library and sync - entire or selected while unsyncing tones, which will transfer all your mp3 music to phone.

Good luck!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I had set up 2 itune accounts. 1 at work and 1 at home. Unfortunately, I had to reimage the home laptop and got a new pc at work within 2 weeks. My music ended up at home and my ringtones at work. So to get the music, I lost the ringtones. To get the ringtones, I lost the music. Now, both are at home! This was very easy to do! I have been searching for a week to try and figure this out. iCloud would only do the music. Ugh! So thank you for saving my sanity!
