Hi, I recently acquired a PowerBook 1400c running system OS 8.1. Is it possible to upgrade it as far as OS X? If so, would I need to do interim upgrades, and which ones? It has only a Zip drive so I'm also unsure how I would install system upgrades if they're not downloadable.
No. It is impossible to run Mac OS X on a PowerBook 1400c. The latest OS it will run is Mac OS 9.1. You can also run Mac OS 9.2.1 if you use a special app called OS9 Helper. Here's a link to OS9 Helper in case you're interested (the actual app download): http://www.os9forever.com/downloads/os9helper/release/os9helper.sit. If you need help using OS9 Helper reply to this as I've used it before myself. I wouldn't recommend installing Mac OS 9.2.2 as I installed it on my upgraded Power Mac 7600/132 & it doesn't work the best. To be honest Mac OS 9.2.2 is really just an update designed to make Mac OS 9.2.1 more Mac OS X Classic environment compatible (it helps Mac OS X be able to run Mac OS 9.2.2 virtually & makes it more compatible in general).
Before upgrading the OS you should look at your MB of RAM.You will need at least 32MB for OS 9.
You can upgrade from 8.1 to 9 directly-but you will need a CD-Drive(internal or external) for the system CD.
