"retrieving mail" wheel won't stop spinning

Hello.
I use Mac Mail for 3 mail accounts- .Mac mail, and 2 others.
The spinning wheel that tells you that it's checking for mail won't stop spinning next to my .Mac mailbox name.

But new mail DOES arrive in the mailbox.

It's kind of a pain because when I try and quit the Mail app, it lags and the word "Mail" in the top menu of the desktop gets stuck while highlighted. I guess that's because it's constantly checking for Mail for that one account.
Many times I have to force quit the Mail app.

I have the preference set to check mail every 5 minutes.
But it seems like for that one mailbox, it's constantly checking non-stop.

thanks.

Hi Guy,

Read the thread "Delete account without losing mail etc" started by Peter D. Cox on Feb 12. A post toward the end of the thread deals with saving old mail.

Here's my recipe:

Quit Mail.

Move the mailboxes for the POP account and pref file out of the home/library/Mail and home/library/preferences folder and onto the desktop

Open Mail.

Create new POP account.

Reimport old mail items.

I have been able to download mail from my POP account with no problems since then.

However - I did end up with a lot of "duplicate" emails - with one version having no text except a message saying that the email had not been downloaded from the server. I had to delete all of these.

I'm not a guru, so this is probably not the very best approach. But it did get me back in business!

I am having the same problem. Mail starts to down load messages form .Mac but after 20 min I still have all the bars moving in the activity window and a spinning ball. Even hen it seems to have downloaded everything, when you try to open a message with an attachment the balls start spinning and nothing ever happens (this is just trying to open the message not the attachment) it seems the attachment has not downloaded with the message. This is so annoying as I have to force quit mail and try again and again to get my mail. I tried the looking at .Mac for spam and there is none. In fact the only folder that I can read and manipulate quickly is the junk mail folder. MAC DO Something! Problem has been present since 10.4 upgrade but is getting worse.

I just resolved this.

Problem: Never-ending Inbox spinning wheel in Mail when checking POP account on my own domain. Caused Mail to hang on Quit, required Force Quit to exit the app.

Solution: Opened webmail page for POP account, discovered over 100 failure notices for spam sent with my account (spammers sending spam as if from me at my domain). I deleted all these notices, reopened Mail, and this time it checked the 10 legit messages I had in my Inbox and all was well.

seems i have the same trouble with mail and tech guys .... my mail is still screwed up and I even went two states away and on a totally different computer, this one gets email on a different account but not my account ... my provider is anti mac also, if i send email and tell them I am not receiving emails, he does "something" and I start getting emails, then a day or so later same thing again, it's very frustrating. When I get home I am gonna try the totally new account on a different user side. But I think it is my provider.
