Did you sync after renaming? iTunes: How to rename your device
Please look at the picture. The device name is changed in iTunes but the name of "portable device" as it appears in "my comptur" does not change.
On your phone go to Settings > General > About > Name. Change the name by tying a new one. 🙂
Did you try to set it up as new device? How to back up your data and set up as a new device
Look for the name in your Windows Registry. You have to change it there.
Warning: Changing the registry settings are not for the faint hearted. It may render the computer useless.
I tried this option :Settings > General > About > Name and then change the name. This option will change the name that appears in iTunes. But I want to change the name of "Portable device" as it appears on My computer.
I have set it up as a new device twice. But no luck.
I have the same problem. And, the current name is not anywhere in the registry. So in summary, device name as shows up in Windows Explorer, under computer does not match name in about screen or itunes name. This sounds like a bug of some sorts. Like Apple isn't changing the device name sent out as a camera device.
Anyone know how to report this to Apple directly?
Contrary to one of the posts below, the name is in fact stored as the label of a device handler that is specific to your device. However, changing this registry value (or deleting it) does not solve the problem because the old name returns as soon as you plug the device back in. This might be because of memory caching of the registry, and if so it is possible that a re-boot immediately after editing or deleting the value might do it. However, I haven't tried this.
What I have done that works is as follows:
1) Plug in iPhone and check it is showing in Windows Explorer.
2) Go into 'Control Panel', open 'Device Manager', find the iPhone camera device, and uninstall it.
3) Un-plug iPhone
4) After brief delay, plug iPhone back in again and wait for device drivers to re-install automatically.
Your problem should have gone away! :-)
