Why Does Home Sharing keep dropping out?

Hi,

I recently got an apple TV and I'm very happy with it. However one irritating thing is that the Home Sharing in itunes keeps dropping out. So I sit down comfortably in my armchair, ready to watch one of my home movies that I have in itunes movies on the computer, and go to select it and 'nothing'. I have to drag myself upstairs, open itunes, disconnect home sharing and then reconnect home sharing and then everything is fine.

It's not a huge deal but rather irritating. Can anyone tell me how I can prevent this disonnect of home sgaring from happening?

Thanks,

Steve.

Yes, set them all to the same time zone using the automatic set option - no change, and manually - no change. Also tried a factory reset an ahour ago after which the TV would not access the Wi-Fi (but the MacBook, iPhone, iPod touch and the AT&T Uverse are all working perfectly).

Off to (a different) Apple store to have the Genius guys check it there and replace with one from a different batch.

(Recap: bought it for AirPlay as have TV1 that works well all the time for movie and TV program download/viewing. The TV2 worked flawlessly for 10 days then stopped working for anything. Took it back and got a replacement which worked for 1 day then chucked Airplay but still gave access to all the non-Airplay features including purchased iTunes music, movies and TV episodes, Youtube, and PhotoStream. But no AirPlay).

I just don't get it!

I have MacBook Pro running Lion and latest iTunes, iPhone 4 running iOS 5 and Apple TV 2 all running fine for the last 4 weeks (both home sharing and AirPlay working).

Previously the Apple TV dropped home sharing and AirPlay after anywhere between 30 seconds and 10 mins. It was brand new out if the box at this point.

I set up port forwarding on my router and mistakenly thought that solved the problem (I have turned port forwarding off and everything still works). The only other things I did were manually set the time zone on ATV and give the ATV a static IP, so I can only assume one of these steps cured my issue unless it just miraculously decided to start working!

Update: Took it back, the guy at the genius bar checked the serial number and gave me a replacement. Which works.

Overall, these posts seem to suggest that there is a communication issue to/from the TV that sometimes is resolvable by one or more of the many suggested actions. But these are work-arounds, not solutions, and too varied in nature and effectiveness to indicate a common cause originating from a user configuration issue.

The best advice is take it back to your nearest Apple Store and ask them to check it, fix it, or replace it, and don't waste time chasing shadows.

I had the same problem it was all working fine then just stopped the only way i can watch movies from my itunes is if i load it to my iphone first then play it through my phone to the apple tv. I took my apple tv to a apple store and they gave me a new one it still did work i uninstalled Bonjour this seemed to fix the problem but the next time i turned my itunes on it had stopped working again
