Tried the image capture route, checked the box and it did NOT delete the photos from my phone. Boo!
If you have iOS 7, you can use Image Capture on your Mac to delete photos from the iPhone without importing them:
• Plug the iPhone to your Mac with the iPhone cable;
• Quit iPhoto if it launches automatically;
• Launch Image Capture;
• Select the photos you want to delete;
• Click the red icon to delete the photos from Camera Roll.
Awesome, worked perfectly. Ty
You can also delete multiple photos from the Camera Roll at the same time via using your PC and the following tutorial: How to delete photos from iPhone Camera Roll

and also purchasing the app mentioned used in that link...
This is the best way (using Image Capture) to delete all photos in the camera roll. Sometimes it is the only way because when the iPhone gets almost full the delete all after importing" in iPhoto does not work. Sometimes if there is near zero space available you even have to delete a bunch of photos or apps just to get Image Capture to recognize the iPhone (even if iTunes still does).
Using iOS 7.1 on iPhone 5.
1. Select "Moments" on the Photo App. You will then see the photos divided into dates and where taken. Next to each heading, you will see a Share link ... don't press this yet!!
2. Press the Select link at the very top right-hand corner of the app. You will notice that the Share links change to Select links.
3. Choose which Moments are to be deleted ... this will select every photo in that Moment.
4. Click the bin icon at the bottom of the screen.
After a confirmation prompt, many pictures are deleted at once! 🙂
I have two images, that when I follow MarkJWilcox's instructions, the trash can is grayed out, and those two images cannot be deleted.
Awesome. Thanks!
Thank you. That does work. It leaves the photo stream in tact but does delete pics from all albums connected to and including the camera roll, for example the instagram folder.
Just come across this post and your answer. Excellent! Answer to my prayers. Far easier than tapping 356 photos on the Camera Roll. Thank you Lokeswari x
Ok 2017 July and none of these options work at all anymore,
Furthermore I use PC not MAC
I should be able to 'select all' / 'delete' on my phone
why does Apple have to complicate things so much?
Bless you SmartAlicks.
