thank you. its working now =)
You're welcome! Sometimes 5 year old advice still works. For anyone just joining this thread, here's information on how to do this on newer model phones: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support
Note that the procedure is different for iPhone 7/7 Plus and different again for 8/8 Plus:
Same problem as jojomoore except it's doing it on a 2 month old battery. Tried the old battery and same problem: battery icon with sliver of red and nothing else. If I un-plug the phone I get the 'plug' icon so it's recognizing that it's plugged in. Tried multiple power sources, plugs and cables. iTunes doesn't recognize it... The last two days of use the phone was stuck at 20% battery then the following day 1% battery. I shut it off, plugged it in and it's never come back on. I have a strong suspicion the phone is toast.
Hold the HOME and SLEEP buttons at the same time until an Apple logo appears, about 10-20 seconds. If nothing happens charge with the wall charger for 30 minutes and do it again.
Hey Lawrence,
Thanks. Seemily worked. It's on and charging now. I appreciate the suggestion.
Take Care.

Glad it worked, Doug. What you just did was reboot iOS 5.
We just had the same problem and did what you suggested, worked like a charm. Thank you so much for this post!
Had the same thing just happen and your suggestions worked perfectly - thanks for the tip!

This just solved my problem as well. Thanks
Yes I just had this work as well. My question is, what caused this to happen in the first place?
iOS crashed. It happens with any operating system. The closed equivalent is Mac OS X Panic, Linux Panic, Windows Blue Screen of Death.
you guess are BriLLIANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! love love love you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! mine did the same thing, i did what you posted it worked
This fixed my problem, too. Thanks, Mr. Finch.
The. Man. Thank you!
Just worked for me too 🙂 Thanks Lawrence for saving me the unnecessary trip to the Verizon Wireless store...
Thank you so much, Mr. Finch! I just had my phone die on me, had a mini-heart-attack, then Googled my problem, and was brought to this page, where you gave me the answer to my problem. Thank you so much! 🙂
