I think it is better to go through iTunes. Follow emilyfromtucson her instrctions, by brining to audio books directly to your device by dragging and dropping. That really worked for me.
I have not set up icloud, but this works:
1. In itunes, click on your iphone icon on the left side.
2. Click on the Books tab at the top of the window.
3. SCROLL DOWN - way down - and you will see your audiobooks on the bottom left.
4. Check the box next to the ones you want to sync & click the SYNC button.
This will remove any "unchecked" books from the iphone and add the new ones you check!
Many thanks for this tip Emilyfromtucson, this audiobook problem has been annoying me for a while. Take care of yourself. TheMurman
I have been having the same problems with audiobooks (see my separate question of yesterday). Based on advice I received I went this route: highlight the files, right click Get Info>Options, select Media Type, select Music and the audio books will appear in your music library. You can play them via playlists. I annotated them as Books & Spoken under Genre to assist in this.
That worked fine. I will try this drag and drop technique though too.
Clearly there is a software problem here that Apple need to fix. My files used to sync fine and then suddenly didnt. I had upgraded both my PC software and iTunes/IOS software at the same time, so not sure which is the cause. Presumably it is iTunes or IOS in view of the number of other users having these issues.
Toodle pip.
I have done all this but as I tick sync audiobooks it appears to want to delete anything else i have on my phone and suddenly becomes empty, if i press sync, it asked if I want to erase my phone and start with this new library which seems to only be the audio book. Has anyone else had this problem?
I tried to select audiobooks under books to sync. It said it would wipe everything else off my phone if I did it. So I unplugged the phone from the Mac, then clicked just the audiobook I wanted, then resynced. When I did this, it wiped all the music off my iPhone. I'm now sitting here while it loads ALL my music back in--which I don't really want but I thought it would be faster than painfully going through all my music to select only what I want on my iPhone. Really, really stupid. Why isn't there just an audiobooks folder in the library list that is the destination for audiobook purchases?
I have tried everthing listed by each poster and my audio books still do not show up on my iPhone. I have checked the sync audio books box in iTunes, I have tried to drag and drop, but that is not allowed. My audio books folder on my iPhone is still empty. Now when I try to sync my iPhone it looses it on the network and ejects it. I find it hard to believe that Apple would not find a way to be able to sync audio books, and from these posts it looks like it has been a problem for a while and they STILL have not addressed it?
Please can someone with an iphone 4s please offer advice that works on how to sync audio books from a pc to the phone.
Thanks
Thanks a bunch!!! I wasted way too much time trying to figure this one out. Can't wait untill they get this to sync with I cloud....
A client of mine is having the same issues. The Audiobooks used to be on her iPhone 4S and used to work fine. After a sync, a few of them stopped appearing and thus she couldn't play them. Now they play fine in iTunes and they are also on the iPad and working (I'm afraid of syncing that device and killing its functionality). It should be said that she has around 15 audibooks and only 7 or 8 are doing this. I've tried to completely remove all audibooks and sync again and nothing. I've also removed all audibooks and tried to sync just the ones we know don't work and no results.
One thing to keep note of though, when using this method, you cannot later use iTunes to delete those audiobooks that you dragged. You have to go into Settings on the phone, tap General, and then go into Usage. After everything loads (takes just a second,) go into Music. You can then hit "Edit" and delete the audiobooks you dragged over in iTunes.
Bizarrely, iTunes ignores audiobooks in a playlist (ignores meaning it doesn't sync them to the phone, but will sync everything else in the list) if they're in iTunes as actual "audiobooks." If iTunes interprets the audiobook as just another music album, it will synch them just fine.
Equally bizarre, it appears the only way to get an audiobook onto your phone (if it's classed as Audiobook and not Music,) is to manually drag them, and you can't delete them from the phone in iTunes. You have to use the method I described. It's a very strange hole in how iTunes functions.
Thanks emilyfromtuscon, I was tearing my hair out but that worked like a dream.
I hope your problems have been solved by the time. But I thought I had the same problem until I realised that I just have to schroll down on the Ipad or Iphone Sync Menu "Books" Section to see Audiobooks appear.
Then you just have to select "Sync the Audiobooks".
But It has taken me months before understanding that in Itunes synch menus Audiobooks are in Books now.
And as it is not intuitive and as you can't see it if you do not scroll down, I just found it by mistake.
Maybe you have the same problem than me.
Hope this is the case.
By Jove he's got it!
Brilliant, and so simple when its pointed out. Why didn't I spot that before? This explains where the 'audiobooks' tag disappeared to several versions back. I've just done what you suggested and it works.
I had been getting around it by relabelling the audiobooks as music under 'options' in the Info box and then making a books playlist but now I don't have to.
Many thanks
PS. Have just updated to iTunes 11 in which everything has been moved around comprehensively but I think I can manage it. They do like to keep us guessing.
Thanks!! 😉 Worked on the first try!!!
I just posted the same question - why would anyone want to delete everything? I thought I misunderstool the question.
The audiobook issue is weird with Apple. Sometimes its very smooth, many times it isn't - often due to the origin of the audiobook. Sometimes I think Apple doesn't want to upload a book we didn't buy from iTunes, rather the public library with overdrive.
