troubleshooting speakers and microphone

Hi,

My 06 2 GHz Intel Core Duo iMac's (running 10.6.8) speakers and internal microphone just stopped working afew hours ago. I have not loaded anything new or changed any settings. I checked the "Sound" settings under Hardware in System Preferences for "input, output, and sound effects"; not one seems to be working. Additionally I tried the keyboard buttons without success as well (mute, volume up, volume down).

Is there anything else I can do to try to troubleshoot and resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance!!

A few broad stroke things to try:

Repair Permissions in Disk Utility (Utilities Folder)

SMC Reset

Shut down.

Unplug power cord and any peripherals.

Wait 15 seconds.

Re-attach power cable.

Wait 5 seconds and restart

PRAM Reset

Shut down and restart and immediately hold down Command, Option, P, and R. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time, release
