Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Daughter's keyboard was typing symbols. Now she cannot log in after shutdown.

Bit of a tricky one, this, as I wasn't there when it happened.

As far as I can gather, my daughter was messing about typing random letters into a facebook chat box whilst chatting to a friend (no, I can't imagine why one would do this either!!) & then suddenly the keyboard would only type symbols (so I'm guessing she might have accidentally typed in something to invoke a different use of the keyboard??).

She shut the computer down as normal & now, when the log in screen comes up, she is unable to log in.

The password is correct but I'm assuming that the the keyboard is not functioning correctly when you type (& is not actually entering the proper password) because even the return key enters a black dot into the password field when you press it!

So we're a bit stuck!

I'm typing this from my other daughter's MacBook, which is the same make & model:

Model Name: MacBook

Model Identifier: MacBook7,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Thanks.

As the keyboard on the laptop is not functioning properly, I realised that if I plug an external keyboard into the laptop in question, I might be able to get logged in.

This is indeed the case &, once logged in, the typing is normal from the external keyboard & I can now see all the bizarre symbols that come up when I type into a sticky note using the laptop's keyboard.

Unfortunately, trying to re-start in safe mode doesn't seem to work from the external keyboard & neither does resetting the PRAM & I can't use the laptop's keyboard to do this because it's not working.

So, any other thoughts?

I've also noticed that if I type Command-Q to quit an application, using the laptop's keyboard, it actually logs out of the user area, as if I'd typed Command-Shift-Q.

I've checked all of the Universal Access setting & they appear to be disabled, but of course, if they were enabled, the external keyboard would reflect that.

I really think the keyboard on the laptop is broken. 😟

Unless anyone can think of anything else I can try?

Right. I think I've made some progess.

After lots of playing with different key commands using both keyboards & a very technical process of bashing some of the modifier keys, it would seem that the alt key was stuck & the shift key still is!

It's now clear that earlier on, certain keyboard commands were consistent with the alt & shift keys being stuck & now the same is true of only the shift key being stuck, so the inbuilt keyboard is typing normally again, but all in caps.

I guess this could be properly broken, but are there any good ways of trying to free up stuck keys?

How do I get this issue fixed. On my keyboard it is showing as though the control key is being pressed when it is not. Any form of tying brings up only symbols. It is not the keyboard I changed to a new keyboard and the error still occurs, cannot do anything with the unit. Cant boot in safe mode or reset smc because keys are appearing pressed. How to fix this
