call forwarding

Hi.... I'm using an iPhone 4s. The carrier is ATT. Lately, I have started using the 'call forwarding' feature under 'phone settings'. I'm forwarding to a landline in the house that I'm living in. The reason for the forwarding is that I get little or no ATT cell reception in the house. So upon arriving at the house, I turn call forwarding on.... and vice versa, when I leave. At first, I'll see the 'call forward' icon on the phone screen at the top. But when I'm inside and the reception disappears, so does the 'call forward' icon.

My question is: Does the call forwarding feature foward calls when the iPhone is in a no reception location? Should I be concerned that the icon disappears when the signal disappears. I'm already aware that in order to turn 'call forwarding' on or off, you first have to be in a signal area in order for it to be transmitted to ATT's equipment. I've only been doing the call forwarding for a short time, so I don't have lengthy experience; I know that some calls have been forwarded to my landline, but that may have happened when I intermittently get a signal on the phone at the house. In any case, a definitive answer would be great!

Thanks....

If you're using a call forwarding feature on the phone itself, the phone would probably have to get a signal in order to receive the call and then forward it. However, I've never used such a feature. My carrier uses a different method for fowarding calls (one which I think AT&T also has) where you dial a prefix and the number you want the calls forwarded to. This forwards the call at the switch level so the phone doesn't need to even be turned on.

I found this link. Perhaps it will be helpful.

Meg... thanks! I've investigated using the 'codes' instead of the phone settings directly on the iPhone. I'm also using *11 as the suffix to the string of numbers and that tells ATT that I only want voice calls forwarded and nothing else. I save the activate and deactivate codes as 'favorite' contacts and it's quite easy to switch on and off. But now I'm faced with voice mails in 2 different mail boxes; my iPhone's (which always notifies me in real time) and my landline (which I have to 'check in with' like in the old days.) I wonder if there is some way to forward the call but not the ID of the call and the voicemail. That is, still get notification of the call on the iPhone and the voicemail even when the call has been forwarded (all this when also off the network which is when I would use the call forwarding). Wishful thinking??? Any solutions for this?
