I've a problem to transfer the photo from my iphone 4s to PC by using windows 7, which cause the photo upside down regardless of what camera orientation I snap. Anyone has a solution and similar problem on it?

I use iphone 4s camera to take a photo, and the orientation of the camera is held as the iphone 4s advertisement shown. However, I noticed that some photo while I transfer to my Pc by using windows 7, most of the photos have shown upside down, but only one or two photos show correctly. I've no problem to transfer other photo that I shot either using olympus, canon, Nokia, or Samgsung galaxy SII. This really make me mad, is anyone out there encounter similar problem? and how to solve this bug? Thank you.

So just to clarify, you are holding the phone with the Volume Up button in the top right corner, pointing straight ahead and some photos show corrctly in Windows 7 and others don't?

What application are you viewing them in Windows 7 with?

Also, do the following...download Faststone Image Viewer (free) and see if the images are still wrong or whether they show correctly.

This is a Windoze bug, or more accurately the photo viewing software included with Windoze does not support the orientation flag values included with a photo' s EXIF data now being used/implemented by newer cameras and by the iPhone beginning with iOS4. This also speeds up the time is takes for a captured photo to be saved/processed.

Software Support for Orientation

While there are countless software programs available today that display JPEG images, only a subset of them actually interpret the EXIF Orientation flag. Just like color management, many programs simply display the JPEG image as it is stored, and completely ignore any extra details stored in the file's metadata. The most important of these additional details is the Orientation flag, stored in the JPEG APP1 marker under EXIF IFD0.

ApplicationOrientation Supported?
Windows Picture and Fax ViewerNo
IrfanViewYes (need to enable)
PhotoshopYes

Not a problem with OS X on a Mac.

I am computer challenged, so although I understand the concept of the tech answer you received I don't know what that means for a fix. I am experiencing the same situation. Although I don't know what the fix is for the phone itself, I have found that when I transfer the photo to my pc photo program, in my case, WIndows Live Photo Gallery, the system allows me to go to the photo, click open, then click edit, then click on the triangle icon to rotate right or rotate left. Once I save the edited version it is available to email in the proper orientation. Hopefully someone will post an easy fix for those of us that only know how to follow instructions, not what we are doing! Good luck.

Doubtful there will be a fix for the iPhone itself since the iPhone is using a method to store the orientation flag with a photo's EXIF data - an open/available standard that more and more newer cameras are making use of. The fix lies with the photo viewing software you are using on your Windoze PC, which completely ignores the orientation flag included with a photo's EXIF data with photos captured by the iPhone which will be the same with newer camera making use of the same.

Although I've said exactly the same thing in other threads i.e it's the exif metadata tag that tells the software what way up the camera was, I was interested to hear that some images are correct whereas others are wrong.

What I'd like to hear from the OP is whether they all fine in Faststone Image Viewer.

If so, then yes, as we always suspected Windoze doesn't work particularly well, but if the images are still not showing corectly in some cases, I'd suggest looking at the exif data directly to see if the images are tagged correctly.

If I open up an iPhone 4 image in Photoshop it clearly shows the orientation tag...worth a look.

Hi, Dave Hutch,

Thank you for your advise. To answer your question.

1. Yes, I was holding the iphone 4s volume button on my right top when I took those photo.

2. I'm using windows photo viewer.

3. I'll down load 'Faststone Image Viewer' as your advise later.

Anyway, I found another interesting thing about this issue. I tried to take 4 photo at the same view continuously with 4 different orientation, first, with volume button on my right top, follow by home button at below, then home button on my right hand, finally, home button on my top. The result is all 4 photos correctly shown on windows photo viewer. I did it twice and it works the same. Since then, I seem have no problem to get its photo orientation rightly shown at windows viewer. I'll find an opportunity to take more photo to confirm this finding. Thank you.

I've tried with more photo shot lately and I realize my findings does not work as I presume early. My photo is still upside down if I take a photo with the volume button on my top right. Similarly to video shot. However, I can easily get it right by shooting the photo or video with the volume button at my bottom left, 180 degree opposite orientation as the advertisement shown. Futhermore with this position, my iphone 4s lens is on my top left which seems more similar to most of the camera design. Photoshop program also able to rectify this photo upside down problem, after saving the correction photo, I've no problem to use windows photo viwer to view them.

I've a problem to transfer the photo from my iphone 4s to PC by using windows 7, which cause the photo upside down regardless of what camera orientation I snap. Anyone has a solution and similar problem on it?
