Yeah, this is annoying.

Obviously I'm also into photography but I do all manipulation on the Mac. The pics are not loaded onto the iPad until I'm completely finished with them. I keep them on the iPad for "show and tell."

I just came across this IOS app, available from the Apple app store, that just might help the OP. Unless I missed it, there is no listing of supported cameras but the writeup states that the free Lite version can be used to confirm that the app supports the desired camera.

You all have been fabulous and some how we will all learn more as this mystery unfolds. Thanks for all of your research assistance. I will be passing along the meat of these findings to my current and future students, friends and family members, (a count of over 500), who own or may want to own an iPad. I will ask them to report what cameras they are using and if they in fact are being supported by the iPad Photo application or not. Maybe that will help?

Here is what I missed!

It looks like the worst that will happen is that the OP will need this app.

Edit...

Important note on the Apple Camera Connection Kit

The list on this page represents cameras that PhotoRaw supports. However, be aware you will not be able to import images from an SD card via the Apple Camera Connection Kit unless the camera in question is also supported by Apple. You will still be able to import images into PhotoRaw via any of the alternate means - email, iTunes file sharing, via file sharing programs such as DropBox, etc. For a current list of cameras that are supported by the Apple Camera Connection Kit, see the supported cameras page on the Apple site.

I'm not sure how to read that list. I am recently attempting to get my camera and iPad2 to talk. Wtih the Camera Connection Kit I have no problem reading the card from my D90 and getting thumbnails. However, I cannot view the photo without importing to the iPad. My purpose is just to view them but I guess that is not a possibility.
