Is there an internal blu-ray drive for macbook pro yet?

Hi, I have searched the communities to find out if I can get a Blu-ray drive for my MBP running Lion, but I only keep finding articles about very creative workarounds.

I just want an internal drive that will play my movies like it is supposed to. Does one exist? If so, is it something I can get done at apple? or does it have to be installed 3rd party?

Would love it if someone could help. I love my MBP but this is really getting old.

Macblurayplayer doesn't work with the most recent bluray discs like "Life" (the new BBC documentaries in bluray) etc.

Has for months that I write to customer service but without solving anything ... and this is not due from my hardware configuration (I'm even bought a new recorder).

Since Macblurayplayer, besides all the crap that makes, use the internet connection for downloading various data, I think that there is some trouble with different countries (I'm italian that is not a "core" country). I think.

Macblurayplayer is not the solution, is the bad end of a drama.

Hi Jordy1, I'm thinking of putting a slot loading bluray drive into my 2.4GHz C2D mid-2010 mac-mini. When I run the System Profiler I see that the optical drive uses ATAPI, yet the drive you referred to is SATA. Obviously I'm not to clear on my hardware details, but don't ATAPI and SATA things have different connectors?

Hi Mick_M

Yes you are correct I installed a SATA BluRay drive. I think I posted a link to the one I got on eBay and they are still available.

I will happily stand corrected, but I believe ATAPI is the driver that allows your Mac to talk to a SATA interface, on older Mac's I think it was a PATA driver that allowed it to talk to an IDE interface. So ATAPI isn't hardware, it's software. That's why you Mac is showing an ATAPI interface.

Weirdly just yesterday I whacked in a 480Gb SSD (Blinding deal on Amazon £240) and it's given it a real punch in speed.

Good luck with your install, the only niggle I had was swaping the thermal sensor from the DVD drive to the BluRay one. I had to use some electrical tape to make sure it stuck in place. Worked a treat and the Mac Mini works brilliantly. 🙂

Actually, this one at Digistor is pretty sweet, it's also compatible with the new quad-layer discs:

I've also had no problem watching blu-ray movies using the blu-ray player for mac available at http://www.macblurayplayer.com

I don't know if apple's internal disk burning software will work with this, but I know Toast does.

I actually never installed the UJ 265 - it was supposed to work on iMacs, and the UJ 267 was supposed to work on the older MBPs with a superdrive slot. I have seen the UJ-265 installed in a friend's system, a mid-2010 27" iMac, he never mentioned that it had loading problems

I finally ended up going with OWC's Mercury Pro external blu-ray writer, at http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MR3F8BDSD16/ - it pretty much ***** for travel, but works around the house, like with an iMac. The one they show here is a LightScribe, with USB 3.0 and FW 400/800, but the older version was eSATA, USB 2.0 and FW 400/800 and I don't believe it has LightScribe capabilities.

Hello,

I am thinking about replacing the DVD-RW in my MBP Mid-2012 13-inch Non-retina with a Blu-Ray burner.

I read on the web that it can be done with these model Blu-ray burners.

1) Panasonic UJ267

2) Panasonic UJ167

Has anyone tried this ?.....

Will OS-X support a Blu-ray burner ?.....

I know I need an app for playing and burning Blu-ray disks like "Toast" and "Macgo Blu-ray player".

It's because of this why, sadly, my next computer (laptop only household) will be a windows... Don't get me wrong, I love apple and their products (owner of MBP, MB, iPad, iPhones, Apple watch), they are just allienating people who want more options/freedom like blue ray drives, shoot even dvd drives now a days... I have a huge DVD collection that I like to take with me when I travel so I can watch movies, but I am stuck with staying with the old MBP that still has a DVD drive but older hardware. And now DVD's are being replaced by blue ray so all of my newer movies are blue ray... I can get a really good PC that has a blue ray player and better specs then the MBP equipped with the old dvd drive. The reality is not everyone has an internet connection 24/7 like those living in silicon valley, and the new Apple products are alienating these people.

I prefer Windows too over Mac however the Viruses and Malware out on the internet are everywhere. Click on a wrong link and you may get infected. That is why I am only buying Mac from now on.

I hope the prices come down on Mac soon and new MBP come out too with USB-C ports for quick loading of 4K video to USB-C flash drive.

I Guess the Blu-ray drive is going to be made obsolete and officially dead very soon now.

Maybe the next 4k video players and Apple TV might come with a USB-C port also.

Is there an internal blu-ray drive for macbook pro yet?
