iMac won't sleep

Since upgrading to 10.7.2, my iMac won't go to sleep on its own. It will shut down disk drives and blank the screen, but the CPU continues to run. Before I upgraded, I didn't have this issue. I have even rebooted the computer to make sure everything is clean and it still won't sleep.

Any ideas? Brad

Hello Bradley!!

I have found the solution to your problem.

I have had my iMac for about three years now. It has never slept so far. It started to sleep about two months ago after i changed something. I have re-enable this thing and suddenly it won't sleep again. So i disabled this something and now it sleeps again, hurrah!!

You have to disable the Guest User account on your iMac. It will work 100%! Look forward to hearing your reply!!

I'm so happy for myself too šŸ˜

Presumably you've doubled checked the settings in Energy Saver already.

Are you running any programs like 'Little Snitch', 'ClamXav Sentry', 'MacKeeper' or have any peripherals connected that could cause hard disk activity? Your Mac won't sleep if something accesses the HD, so you need to find out what it causing disk activity.

If the answer to all the above is 'no', double check what programs are in your Login Items ( > System Preferences... > Users & Groups). If you're not sure whether any of them might cause disk activity, post the list here.

I have checked all of those things. Nothing is running in the background that hasn't been running for some time now. Like I said, I even restarted it to make sure there are no background processes running that could cause this. Brad.

It doesn't necessarily follow that nothing has changed as an unintended consequence of something else that you — or an app — has done. Restarting your mac will only run the very things that are in your login items all over again, so again, I'd suggest you post the list of what's there if you're in any doubt [providing the check suggested by Linc (above post) isn't the issue].

Login items: ATI Monitor, System Events, Default Folder X Helper

Wake for network access is checked. This was on before Lion and sleep wasn't a problem.

The only hardware change is I added an Apple Trackpad.

The other software change is I enable iCloud for syncing my contacts, calendars, doduments & data and find my mac. I will turn off find my mac and see if that helps.

Choose  > Log Out <account name>

Sign back in from the Login window and as soon as you hit 'Return' (or click the button), hold down the shift key until the desktop starts to appear.

If the problem is solved after doing this, then the problem is with your login items. Remove all of them except one. Restart. Problem returns? Then the one you left in your login items is the problem. If not, add back one of the others. Restart. Problem solved? You get the idea...continue like that till you figure out which one is the culprit.

Worked for me too after disabling the user account. (I then restarted.) Thanx!

Now, If I could only figure out why Timbuktu won't wake a sleeping screen for incoming users when the "Wake for network access" is checked? (The computer drive is set for Never sleep.) The host sees and shows the frame to the remote user as a sleeping screen but does not wake it. Hmmm?

Cancel my "Worked for me" comment regarding this thread.

Today, June 3, 2010, the iMac again refused to sleep from the Energy Saver controls. The solution that Natthew mentioned worked for one day (or apparently worked) as a result of disabling the Guest account.

Now, we're back to square one. No screen sleep and no incoming network wakeup.

Lion has turned out be be the most quirky system I've used since 1993. I should have stayed with Tiger.

Is there a 3rd party app that will do what the system says it will do, put the Mac screen to sleep after a selected number of minutes and allow it to be woken up by the usual methods?

Thanks
