OWC and NEWEGG are two other vendors of HDDs you may want to look at.
Ciao.
Your choices are Western Digital Scorpio Blue 1tb and Samsung Spinpoint 1tb. Both are 5400rpm drives.
Be sure to order the 9.5mm height Western Digital drive as there is an older 12.5 still circulating which is slower than the 9.5 mm version.
OWC has already been mentioned, but they specialise in Mac upgrades.

Keep in mind that that is a 5400RPM drive. If you want a performance boost you should consider a 7200RPM drive, although these max out at 750GB. Link
1tb 5400 rpm drives are faster than 500g (or less) 7200 rpm drives, they have twice the data density which results in faster access than their little brothers. Areal density beats rotational speed.
Interesting, but the OP would still be better off with a 750GB 7200RPM than a 1TB 5400RPM drive. That is unless he really needs that extra 250GB.
Csound1, greetings; You have aroused my curiosity. As I understand your comment, data capacity trumps speed. Or put another way, there is a data capacity/speed ratio which results in a performance quotient.
I have never considered this. Unless you would be violating the National Security Act, I would be most appreciative of your source(s) for this information.
Best regards.
Ciao.
Thanks for the replys has made things a lot clearer for me:)
So would I be ok getting the Seagate Momentus ST9750420AS - Hard drive - 750 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 16 MB? This would work well in my MacBook?
Just a bit confused as there seems to be a lot of these that come up when googling but they all have slight variations in the name just want to make sure before I buy.
Thanks again:))
I have the same drive in my MBP. No problems to date.
Ciao
Ah great and thanks for getting back to me:)
Just to clarify is this the same drive Seagate Momentus 7200 2.5" internal hard drive - 750 GB from Seagate
SATA 3.0 Gb/s, 7200 rpm?
Thanks;)
That drive should work nicely.
Great! Thanks a lot for all the responses and help will order it now! :)

The key is how much data passes under the head in a given time period, this is affected by at least 2 things, density of data, and the speed with which it passes under the head, 7200 rpm drives are roughly 33% faster so 33% more data passes in any given time period. The Areal Density of a single platter 1tb drive is 100% greater than a 500G, easily overcoming the 33%speed increase of a 7200 rpm drive over a 5400 rpm drive. A 750G drive has 150% of the Areal density of a 500G, so it also would be faster regardless of the rotational speed increase from 5400 to 7200.

Actually no, a 750G drive has 150% of the data density of a 500G, but it is only 33% faster so overall it would be about 17% slower, (all other things being equal of course)
Hmm ok I'm a bit confused now! So which type would you recommend? For speed and size?
Thanks

A 1tb 2.5" drive is both the largest and fastest mechanical drive you can fit, today.
