Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

How do I autosplit a project after it's been imported?

Disclaimer: this is my first attempt to really commit to Aperture. I just loaded a full 32 GB SD card and cleared it after confirmation of a successful import. I might be missing something really simple here, but after searching the forums I have found others with the same question receiving answers that don't address the actual problem.

Here's the issue. In the "Import" preferences of Aperture 3.2.2 I set "Autosplit into Projects" to "One project per day", and then plugged in an SD card to import over 1,500 photos from my Canon 60D. After the import was done, I confirmed the two dialogs that asked if I wanted to delete the photos after they were "successfully imported". However, looking at my library after the import, the photos were not automatically split into different projects. They're all now listed under "Untitled Project".

I went back to the import dialog, which (now that my SD card has been ejected) lists the photos under my "Pictures" folder by default. I can see on the right hand side an option to "Automatically split projects" which was not there when I imported from the SD card. I know for a fact that it wasn't there because I carefully looked through every single option under the "Import Settings" dropdown.

So, now I want to find the option in Aperture that will automatically split the already imported project into one project per day. Please, someone, tell me this is possible. I couldn't find a clear answer by searching this forum, the best suggestion was creating an AppleScript action to do one day at a time, which would be completely ridiculous. The photos were imported with the same information they had on the camera. Nothing would prevent them from being split after import. There has to be an option somewhere to split the project after being imported.

The timezone on my camera was off by one hour (I never adjusted for daylight savings), but only one hour. The import settings for timezone were correct. I imported with "RAW+JPEG Pairs", "RAW as master". What can I do?

Sorry, but there is no built-in option to autosplit an exiting project.

Other than

  • writing a custom Automator Workflow or AppleScript to do that programmatically
  • or define smart albums or searches for each day, then create a project from each album or search result,

there is little you can do within Aperture once the project has been imported.

For an Aperture Newbie I think the easiest solution (uless you already have invested a lot of work into adjusting and tagging the images) would be to

  • reexport the gigantic project "Export masters"
  • and reimport the exported folder with proper import settings.

The Autosplit should be turned on

  • in the Aperture Preferences -> Import, Autosplit into Projects
  • and during imort in the Import Panel -> Import settings -> Aperture Library Brick -> Automatically split Projects

Time has past, since this post has ben written...

And sadly Apple has not addressed the problem... (YET)

The Solution is as simple as it is sad.

Apertures library is now compatible with iPhoto

Meaning : you can open your A. Libraries with the iPhoto App.

And, YES iPhoto supports - under EVENTS, AUTO SPLIT (SELECTED) EVENTS.

Reopen in aperture - Done.

But why the big brother of iPhoto isn’t capable of doing such a task... ???

Thanks
