i have a 8gb transcend flash drive which works well with my pc but in my mac book pro it shows error message when connected as follows'disk is not readable !!!!!!any help ????

hi there!!!here are the following things i get when i insert flash drive::

1) error message - the disk you have iserted is not readable by this computer.

2)Opened disk utility after inseting flash drive and bottom of the window shows

total capacity-8.51 gb

write status-read/write

S.M.A.R.T Status- mot supported

patition map scheme- unformatted.

The answer is right there , it is UnFomatted.

So in Disk Utility select the drive, click on the Partition tab, Select One partition from the Partition Layout drop down box, Select Options and make it GUID, then either give it a name or not, select Mac Extended (Journaled) as the format and hit the Apply button.


If it comes back as Not Formatted then the drive is bad even though you may be able to read it on a Windows PC.

OK, as others have suggested, you need to format it.

  1. Open Disk Utility.
  2. Select your flash drive.
  3. Select Erase.
  4. Select a format. I recommend choosing MS-DOS (FAT), since you have a PC, and you should want it to be readable by both systems. If you don't, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  5. Give it any name you wish.
  6. Check it.

If this doesn't work, the problem is with your drive.
