why won't my epson printer work after upgrading to lion?

I recently upgraded to Lion 10.7x and my Epson Workforce 635 printer doesn't work anymore. (error -1) I've checked all the drivers and have the current updates. I've reset the printer in settings. What can I do to fix this issue?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2), Epson Printer WF 635

I went ahead and went to the Epson website to check to see if the printer was compatable with Lion, and this is what I found from: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&sku=C11CA69 201 under the specifications section.

Operating Systems:

  • Windows® 7, Windows Vista®, Windows XP, Windows XP x64
  • Mac OS® X, 10.4.11, 10.5.8 and 10.6.x

It looks like this printer probably will not work in Lion until Epson releases a software update that makes it work with 10.7.x.

Let me know if you have any more questions,

Kevin

I just finished installing an Epson Workforce 545 on Lion. This info is valid as of early March 2012. The trick seems to be this: DON'T install using the CD that comes with the printer. DON'T download the driver from Epson.

First do an Apple Software Update to make sure the machine is up-to-date. Then simply open the Printer & Scan preferences and add the Epson printer. It will download the driver directly from Apple and you will be good to go. If you do install the bad drivers from Epson, you have to remove the /Library/Printers/EPSON folder and also anything EPSON in the Cache folder, then start over.

I agree with aeropapa17, I just installed the Epson Workforce 635 on my 3 Mac's all running 10.7.3. and it works perfectly. The trick is don't use the cd included. First connect the printer to your wireless network, then install the printer using the usb cable, do a test print then delete it. Then you can install the wireless printer and it works perfectly, including the duplexing!!

I do keep my machines up to date maybe that is why I had no issues at all. So glad, I bought this printer before I heard about all the issues with Lion.

Meanwhile, I tried several approaches on Mac OS 10.7.4 and 10.7.5 - and finally found a solution. When I added the Epson WF 635 (driver model Epson WF 630) as "IP" wireless printer, I did /not/ use the "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP" but the old-style ordinary "Line Printer Daemon - LPD" protocol.

I did not even had to configure a queue name. Instead, after entering the printer's IP address the OS found the Epson WF 630 driver and assigned it to the entry.

Maybe this helps as well with your setup.
