Mail won't send

Been trying to make sense of the reasons why my mail will not send - and i'm a bit confused!

Keep getting that good old message "The SMTP server “mail.xxxxx.com” rejected the password for user “xxxxxx” in 'Mail', which I am attempting to use.

I have also tried using Entourage, but again my mail will not send. The message here is "my SMPT authorisation failed". I can recieve mail but not send.

My mail account is with BT Internet. Is this a problem with them or with my computer?

I have had these problems when travelling, and found that depending on the 3rd party connection u use, any or all of the following will work:

. use ssl and don't change the outgoing port
. use ssl and change to 995
. have none authentication outgoing and rely on incoming server to authenticate (maybe only works because my ISP has same server for incoming and outgoing)
. the @ in e-mail address that forms part of authentication dialogue seems to be synonymous with + sign
. 10.4.4 seemed to create weakness in keychain, so use the first aid there to clean up the stored keychains. And make sure it correctly calls Mail 2.05 and not just mail.app
. if u have stored e-mails in outbox and u are fiddling with the above, move all except one into drafts (drag and drop) it will save them all trying and failing.
. my ISP said they don't have SSL but in fact they must do because it works..so don't always believe the ISP.
. u know u are on to a good thing if u select ssl because u get a dialogue that can say, as mine does, that the ssl certificate has an error, do u want to proceed? That seems good news because at least it's communicating. In fact I added the certificate (followed the instructions in keychain) but it makes no difference. And the cert is valid to 2009 I think...by which time Apple and the ISP world will be singing off the same hymn sheet (so to speak).

Currently back in the UK, and I send via my ISP dream-hosting from blueyonder (cable company) using ssl and no change of outgoing port. It also worked OK in recent trip to Germany.

I trashed the preference file com.apple.mail.plist. I was using MacMail and using the smtp provided by the isp. It had been working fine, but it started yesterday morning, when I attempted to send an email to someone I never had problems sending to, it said the attempt failed and do I want to use another smtp. The one I was using was Earthlink and it offered another Earthlink smtp so I chose that and clicked send, but it still didn't go. I shut everything down, even the modem and unplugged it. This had happened once before and a total shut down did the trick. But this time after I started up, when I went to launch MacMail from the dock, it bounced a few times and said it unexpectedly quit and do I want to send a bug report to Apple. Well, I can't even do that because it doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe I should call Earthlink?

Please confirm the exact sequence of removing the com.apple.mail.plist, and the other events with shutting the network down, etc?

I don't think Earthlink will do much good, if you cannot get Mail to launch. A good test would be to create another User Account on your Mac, and set at least one mail account as that User. That would tell us if the application Mail is working.

Were you using the authenticated SMTP that Earthlink now provides?

This is the second time I have encountered this frustrating issue as well, both occured after upgrading my system, this time to 10.4.5. I can't believe Apple has failed to address this again.

I should have saved this last time for obvious reasons, but I remember fixing this had something to do with some resetting/cache cleaning feature in Apple's Mail.

It's not restricted to .mac, because I subscribe to Roadrunner.

Some savior out there sent this idea and it totally worked. If anyone has any ideas about this, please let us know.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.

First all, you only receive with POP, and you do not send with POP, but rather with an SMTP used as Outgoing Server. Are you using the SMTP provided by your ISP, or another? Have you checked the latest advisories from your ISP about such things as blocking Port 25, sending from other addresses? Do you have an email account, also set up, that has been provided by your ISP?

Are you at the venue where you subscribe to the services of an ISP?

More info, please.

i syncronize my mac mail account, and use it both at work and at home.

i have two different mail addresses.

out of the blue, it stopped sending from only one of the accounts. it still receives mail to both accounts, but when i send one, i get the prompt saying "cannot send message using the server smtp.mac.com. use the pop-up menu below....etc".

however the window does not let me choose any other smtp account other than the one listed. which, ironically, is the the secondary smtp that allows me to send from the other mail address.

and at other times it says that the "sender address has been rejected by the server"

what frightens me most is that although i can log on successfully to .mac mail online through safari, i can't even send messages that way.

i simply get a message that says "message could not be sent"

help?
