iweb replacement?

I'm now trying the Adobe beta product they're calling Muse (code name). It's very close to the drag and drop iweb experience, and the pages are looking good.

What is aggravating is that when the product does ship, you won't be able to buy it... only pay a monthly or annual fee to "subscribe" to it. Probably will be a dealbreaker for me.

Have already burned through trials of Sandvox, Weebly, WebAccapella (which was not terrible), RapidWeaver and a couple of other also-rans with no true success yet.

I've tried iWeb publishing to a folder then uploading to my domain with spotty results, and the publish to FTP simply does not work for me because my ISP cannot read the password iWeb is sending.

I still hold out hope that Apple might choose to license the sale of iWeb to a third party, or itself offer some new/improved version before this summer. The product does after all have a built-in customer base of thousands like us who were plunking down a hundred bucks a year (plus the cost of iLife) to maintain iWebsites.

iWeb built sites are not suitable for viewing on smart phones at all. They produce way too much code for downloading over cell phone networks and cannot be made to respond to mobile devices.

Mobile devices need special inputs, media players, slideshows etc. Here are some of the my designs for responsive sites that can be viewed on all devices. They were produced using Rage WebDesign but you can use any html editor...

Problems with iWeb are cropping up frequently and this is bound to escalate as time goes by. It has not been updated to comply with IE V9 and the first one I have seen with this is with transparency settings.

iWeb will obviously not be updated to use the ever increasing number of HTML5 attributes.

Web design is going to change very fast over the next while as more people realise that they are losing customers by not having compact portable friendly designs.

Having said this, I would advise anybody who doesn't want to go beyond drag and drop to hold off committing to a new application as I sure somebody will come up with something that will easily create sites using the new frameworks.

I decided to go with learning a little HTML and CSS to create my own designs and find this way quicker and easier than using an app like Flux which combines code entry and drag and drop.

There's a fairly steep learning curve to get the hang of Flux's idiosyncrasies and you can end up with code that's not much cleaner than iWeb, Sandvox, RapidWeaver etc. You can of course create better and more versatile sites with it and take advantage of the latest developmets in HTML and CSS.

Roddy- I knew I could depend on you to tell it like it is, or should I say like it will be. I have not tried Flux, but have downloaded trial versions of Sandvox and Rapidweaver. Prefer iWeb over both. Sandvox you can't do something as simple as resizing a Header.

If you hear of the perfect iWeb replacement (Topic Title) in the coming future, you would be doing the iWeb faithful a huge favor to keep them updated. Many thanks.

Flux 3 and MacFlux are basically the same product, so Flux 3 is from http://www.theescapers.com and there is a free trial download there - go and download that and you can trial it for a month.

It is available in the Mac App Store too, but I have found it is more expensive to purchase it there than The Escapers. MacWare recently had a special half price offer on it.

First - I do not want to replace iWeb. I would like nothing more than for Apple to update iWeb with the latest web standards. Believe it or not I'm still holding out hope. iBooks Author was created by the same team, I believe, that created iWeb and Pages. Now that iBooks Author is released, either iWeb will be the next project or we will all have to accept the end of iWeb updates.

That being said, my main iWeb site is a business site that is now pulling in almost all my new business. A fair amount of that new business is contacting me from iPhones and iPads. I want to make sure that my site uses the latest web standards to make my customers experience on the site as good as it can be so they end up being a paying customer. As of now, my iWeb site does all that. But going forward, I'm not sure. It takes a long time to learn a new application. I don't want to be trying to learn a new web app only after half my site is not displaying properly.

And lastly, I'm excited about iBook Author. I've signed up for an iTunes Connect Account, registered with Bowker to be able to purchase ISBNs and registered a new domain name. I want to build a website based on what I'll be publishing from IBooks Author. Now would be a good time to learn a new website creation application that incorporates all the latest web standards.

I downloaded Flux and imported an iWeb site. Thought it might be easier to get a feel for Flux by editing my site instead of starting from scratch.

Wow though, for someone with little knowledge of HTML/CSS it will be quite a learning curve. Guess that's what Community Colleges are for ???

First thing I notice is that in View/Preview View, my photo galleries work, but not the Standard iWeb Slideshows in the photo galleries.

That's true but if you look at the resulting code produced by iWeb and that by Flux you'll see that Flux produces much leaner and generic code which is faster to load, more compatible with browsers and just more efficient.

It will take some learning but start out small and go at it. You don't have to abandon iWeb right away so there's plenty of time to come up to speed with Flux or whatever application you choose.
