I had the same thing happen to my phone about 2 weeks ago so I took it to the Apple store to see what was going on. The kid there took the phone in the back and said that it was an unfixable hardware issue and brought out a brand new phone for me. I was pretty happy about the customer service and quick replacement until the brand new phone, which I got last weekend, started doing the same thing on Tuesday, only a few days after getting it.

I am thinking that I am pretty unlucky or I am doing something wrong. I told the kid at the Apple store that I put my phone in a workout armband when I go to the gym or go for a run and asked if doing that was bad for the phone, he said that it was fine to do that. Other than that neither phone, the original working well for about 6 months and the new one for about 4 days, was subjected to any water damage or drop damage.

I just tried the alcohol cleaning of the charging port and blow drying the phone about 45 minutes ago and it did nothing. I didn't realize this was a charging port issue. I thought it was related to the headphones, because both times it started acting up was when I had headphones pluged in.

I guess I am back to the Apple store when it opens up. I really hope that they can resolve this, although I have a feeling that they will tell me they can't do anything since they already gave me a new phone. Next contract I am definitely going away from the Iphone.

My problem is slightly different, the ringer works, but when the phone is plugged into a wall socket the ringer and alarm lose all volume. I don't have the same problem when connected to a computer.

This seems a little different to other peoples problems, but as I am living in an Islamic country cleaning the contacts with alcohol is not possible...

Any suggestions?

Guys - we are all being very dim

Hold your phone face up

Now tilt it to the right until you can see your volume buttons

Look at the little switch above the + button

Can you see a red line? If so there's your problem. You have set the phone to silent

Pull the switch

Problem solved

This had been driving me nuts for days

Now I feel like a muppet!

Seems that there are a multitude of solutions here. I first noticed my problem when the charge tone was silent. Natuarally, I pushed the volume buttons and noticed that there was no indicator bar showing under the ringer icon as shown in the picture from the original message on this thread.

I called my iPhone directly and there was a ring tone sound so this told me the speaker worked. I turned on some music. There was silence but when I plugged in the head phone, I can hear sound. Ok enough with all the symptoms. Blowing out the charge port with some compressed air solve the problem. There was alot of crud in there.

Hey guys. I had the same exact problem for about 6 months now. I did everything you can think of or find online. My answer was the alcohol cleaning of the docking area of the phone. Make sure you get top and bottom of the inside of the dock connector. Let it dry for 5 minutes and it should work. I should add, that my issue was the same exact issue depicted in the original post for this thread. Good luck everyone!
