Mac will not stay in sleep mode

My IMac running system 10.5.8 will not remain in sleep mode. I have tried closing all running applications and this makes no difference. After restarting the computer it seemed to function correctly for a short time then once again would not remain in sleep mode. The energy saver has no wake options set.

Thank you all for you suggestions but nothing seems to work - not even the PleaseSleep program. I am not touching anything, mouse, keyboard, desk, after putting it to sleep. The display goes dark for about a second and then comes right back on. The energy saver does nothing and as I said neither did the PleaseSleep program. I did a full Norton scan of the hard drive and it came up clean. I don't recall changing any settings or intalling anything new (except the latest update of ITunes - but it is not even open). Should I try restoring from Time Machine from about a week ago? I have never done this and don't know what that will do or even really how to do it.

Do you have any software running when you put it to sleep?

You can use the activity monitor found inside the utility folder, inside your applications folder, to see what is running on your iMac.

If you see anything that could stop the computer from sleeping you can make it quit and see if it helps.

It could be something that needs to maintain a network connection is preventing sleep mode.

Still not sleeping. I read the article and tried those options, disabled Norton, checked the activity monitor and don't know what most of the listed items are but I don't see applications that should not be running. The strange thing is when I first turn on my computer it will go to sleep - 1 time - after that it won't. Any other thoughts?
