I have an iPhone 4 and I recently drained it to zero because the Apple website says that will prolong the life of the unit. I read elsewhere that draining a Lithium-Ion to zero hurts the battery. Can someone give me a straight answer?

Draining it to zero and then charging to 100 percent every month or so is a way of keeping the battery capacity readout calibrated.Doing that all the time is not a good way to look after the battery. Charge it whenever you like, as often as you like. Running it to zero before you recharge it as a question of routine is definitely NOT good for the battery. It needs exercise!

You actually can't drain the battery to zero; the phone will shut off before the battery is fully discharged. It's like the gas gauge in your car; "Empty" isn't really literally empty.
i have an itouch for over a year now and i usually drain it about once a month and the battery is still AMAZING
The conventional wisdom spoken in this forum says about every month, but no more frequently. The reason is to recalibrate the battery level sensor.
