Red screen on MacBook Pro

Hello,

This is my first post here on the forums and I would like to ask a question about my MacBook Pro I can't find an answer to.

I have a MBPro (2006) OSX 10.4.11 and recently the screen has gone red where Black should be (please see attached images)User uploaded fileUser uploaded file

I know that it is a problem displaying Black because I have tested a black solid movie file (just a black image playing for 4 seconds) playing as a Quicktime movie on the desktop, and it shows the same red pattern when playing.

Then when I play the same movie file on another MacBook Pro it plays as a black solid movie, not patterned.

If I change the desktop dispaly to solid colour or an image with lots of colour it displays without any problems (the pattern only shows up if there are any black areas in the image)

I took the machine to a local Apple Store and the ran a diagnostic test, and all parts were ticked as working. Also I have run Apple Hardware test and rebooted in various modes all without any change.

So, has anyone suffered the same problem and does anyone know how to fix it.

Many thanks and any advice/ help is appreciated.

I have just completed a successful LCD removal and replacement, with a brand new one.

.....the problem still f****** persists!!!!! How annoying!! But, I might add, the problem is significantly less....

I have seen above that it might be the graphics chip on the logic board which I missed last I was here.

Anyway, laptop is still running absolutely fine - apart from the red screen - and its now 10 years old!!

...maybe one day I'll fix it...might be damaged connections or ribbon cables...or the chip....

I don't know what the problem is, but, IMHO, judging by the pictures you posted, whatever it is, it's a software issue.

Look at the volume icon in the menu bar; it's solid black. Look at the Spotlight icon in the menu bar; it's solid blue. You wouldn't get those if there were a defect with the display or graphics card.

So reset NVRAM

(I expect, though, that they did that at the Apple Store.)

If it doesn't work, install from scratch a pristine version of the OS on an external drive, and boot your machine from it. If it still shows the same symptom, then -- despite my judgment -- it's a hardware issue.

Thank you fane_j for your reply.

I did do a NVRAM (PRAM) restart and that didn't fix it unfortunately.

It's good to know it could be a software issue which is easier to fix. I do still have both the Install discs that came with the MBPro when I bought it new.

So do I have to Install Mac OSX 10.4.5 on an external from Install disc 1 or 2?

I'm currently running Mac OSX 10.4.11, so can I then run an update on the external Hard drive so everything is the same when I try a reboot from that drive?

Also I just had a thought, I do still have the 10.4.11 update.pkg in my receipts folder on my MacBook Pro. Can i re-install the update from that to see if it fixes the problem?

Will that work or will that cause problems so I should not do that?

Many thanks for your help and support.

As I said, pristine. Make sure you have no trace left of an OS on the target drive, and start with disc 1.

No. You don't know what caused the problem. So just do a brand new install and test the result. If it works, then you can go on and update, then test again. The idea is to work in small steps and add minimum complications at each step, in order to isolate the problem.

Can i re-install the update from that to see if it fixes the problem?

I don't know if it will work, because I don't know what the problem is. Nor do I know if it might create any problems -- you should probably check Apple's support KB for that. It might depend on what kind of update it is. I'd say, forget about it for the time being and do the clean install. At least then you'll know if it's a software or a hardware issue.

Has there been any further news on this issue? I've been experiencing the same problem on my MacBook Pro 17inch and like the last poster it appeared to start about the same time as I updated to 10.6.8

Have tried a clean re-install at local Apple store and that didn't fix the problem 😢

As I live in SE Asia but am not confident or fluent in Mandarin I am a little nervous about taking my machine to the local repair center, they have a standard response to all repairs, replace the motherboard... I'm already on my 2nd one and that cost me almost a 1,000 US less than 2 years ago

Did You weld it yourself or did you have someone do it?

I have the same model as you and on another forum it recommended taking it the mac apart and making sure the cables from the screen were plugged in tight, to no avail.

Its kinda annoying me, everything on my mac works great besides the screen. Honestly it beats out some current models with a few upgrades I made and it would be a shame to have to upgrade just because of some red snow on my screen.

So I am getting the same problem, on macbook pro 2007 10.6.8

It suddenly happened when I was deleting some folders from an external hard drive, (I thought for some reason that some support drivers or something had been deleted, although I then thought it would make no difference)

I have tried to calibrate and reset NVRAM to no avail. The last thing I wanna do is re-install the OS because I only just did that a couple of weeks ago, and with an optical drive that doesn't work, and no external drive, it means I have to go to the apple store for them to install it for me.

I am thinking it is a loose connection, as when I pick the laptop up, and move it around, it goes from red, to normal, to red etc. (but usually stays on red) Everything else seems to be working fine, so I think I am going to have to bite the bullet and take it to a genius...

Thanks for the help guys, I will let you know what happens

Hey everyone, I believe I'm having the same issue. Resetting my pram didn't do anything, neither did calibrating my colors.

This first happened yesterday and I used Apple Diagnostics to help ( Using Apple Diagnostics - Apple Support ).

It detected no issues so I did the more through check. It didn't find any problems either. The thing is, the screen looked perfectly fine as soon as I went to the diagnostics screen. And when I reset my computer after that, it worked fine! All day long! And now, in the morning the red started again.. a bit over 24 hours later.

Both times it STARTED fine and then suddenly got bad. I hadn't move my laptop at all either time.
