FCPX Won't List Two External Hard Drives In Event Library! Why?

FCPX won't list two of my 6 external hard drives in the Event Library, including my all-important video hard drive (a 2TB drive I use for my videos). There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of my drives. They work in Finder and in every app I have, and Disk Utility says that they are perfectly fine. These two drives show up as "Cameras" in FCPX for some reason. All the other drives show up fine in FCPX, even the drive I use for my Time Machine Backups. The two missiung drives are formatted exactly the same as the drive that do show up (Mac Journalled) -- there is literally no difference between the drives, so there shouldn't be a problem for FCPX but there is.

Does anyone know why two drives don't appear in the Event Viewer (or appear as "Cameras") while 4 other drives appear perfectly well???

I can't recommend FCPX if I can't access my video hard drive!

Any help woould be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

-- John

Just so you know. I have an iMac that has a single FW 800 on the back. All my externals are FW 400, so I had to get a converter cable to go from the iMac to the first drive. From there, I go drive to drive. Look for a box that has 2 FW connectors so you can chain them. If you are starting from scratch and have the extra cash to go for the FW 800, I would suggest you do that. I didn't want to mix them and I already had 2 FW 400, so I'm sticking with that for now.

Good luck.

John,

I have no doubt that FCPX in it's infinite wisdom is seeing USB drives with video folders as "Cameras". All "new" cameras FCPX is designed to work with have USB connections.

You can try copying a video file or two to the root of your video drive and see if that changes the way FCPX perceives the drive, I doubt it will make any difference.

EUREKA!!! Guys, thanks so much for all your help! Your comments got me thinking about the root drive of my HDs. I took a look at the root drives for all my HDs and noticed that a folder called VIDEO existed in the root directory of the 2 HDs that were showing up as "Cameras", but that folder didn't exist in the drives that were seen properly by FCPX. All I did was change the folders' name from VIDEO to VID and both drives instantly popped up in the Event Library and Project Library in FCPX! WOW!!!

That is a serious quirk in FCPX (one of many, I'm sure) that Apple really should let people know about. Hopefully anyone that is having this problem in the future with FCPX will read this post and know how to fix it.

Thank you so much to you and everyone who commented here! I REALLY apprecate all your help!

Best Wishes,

Read the Steve Jobs biography. Simple was better. He had the right idea in many ways, but I think he took it a little too far in some cases. For example, I hate the fact that I can not save my project manually. There are many times I want to experiment and then cancel out so it doesn't save anything. When I saw that in iMovie I cringed, but to also do it in FCPX seems odd. I can understand it if the product was for my Mother to use, but most of the people using FCP are a little more technical than that. Don't get me wrong, auto save is nice, but you should be able to back out and cancel the session if you like. Oh well. I still think its a great piece of software.

Just to clarify (for the benefit of anyone hoping to glean a solution to this problem) the question was correctly answered in the fourth reply (back on page one of the thread) but sadly the OP was apparently in denial and so confused that he didn't check the names of his folders (the cause of the problem) and after much more fuss about nothing, eventually marked Pancenter's suggestion (that he mark the correct answer) as the correct answer.

I'm agreeing with you Alfredo.

Simple should never extend to "Dumbed Down".

Simple elegant, yes... Simple to try and protect users from themselves... NO!

Why the negativity toward me andynick??? I'm new to these forums and was simply having a tough time with FCPX and it quirks. Who would have thought that having a folder called VIDEO in the root drive would cause FCPX problems? Not me, and onbviously not most of the people posting to this discussion.

No need to get personal.
