Will virus/trojan in mail transfer to a new computer.

I believe I may have a virus (or trojan) on my mail. I have searched the discussions and tried a few things suggested but I understand that even deleting things can come back.

We have a very old system and I have always done the security updates, which are no longer available since 2009-005 (I believe). We are buying a new iMac and I want to be sure nothing gets transferred into it.

Any help? Thanks.

Well, yes, but unlikely it actually affects Macs.

I think you could eliminate it with...

ClamXAV, free Virus scanner...

Free Sophos...

Yes it moved to the trash and the trash under it that's in my name. I then deleted a new spam message that came into my mailbox this a.m. (this time appropriately marked as junk) and it showed in both of those boxes as well.

Tried the same with my husband's account (also sent one to it from my account) and neither showed up in any of the trash.

Ok, I made another mailbox as you said to do for myself. The folder shows up on the sidebar (named it newmbox as I did with the one created for me), but this time no smaller trash can icon with my husband's name on it appeared. I tried to delete so it's no longer in the inbox but doesn't show up in either of the two trashes.

Oh! I went back in and looked at the mailbox prefs/mailbox behavior and the box to move deleted messages to a separate folder was unchecked. I checked that and then the trash basket (sm. icon) with my husbands name on it showed up and the test message I sent and deleted showed up in the trash. I did the erase deleted messages on for his trash and it removed it.

So, if this then will be the solution, do I just ignore the two folders that were created when I did the new mailboxes, and also the trash can marked On My Mac?

Thanks.

Hi BDAqua - I wanted to give you a "correct answer" for everything you have done over this long time, but I see now that you can only give out one of those. And, I know the helpful answer didn't really go with the correct post of yours, I still have a ways to go to get the system down.

Thanks so very much for helping me through this, I know it was a lot of your time and I am so grateful that you stayed with it.
