Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 100% CPU Use

Since upgrading to Lion I've been experiencing a problem where CPU usage will periodically shoot up to 100%, causing temperatures to rise, fans to kick up, and my battery to drain. When I've checked Activity Monitor I've found that the Finder and several applications have spiked in CPU use. Quitting any single application does not solve the problem as the rest will simpy scale up their CPU usage. I have to quit and restart all of them. The list is typically:

Finder

Real Studio

Adobe InDesign CS4

Adobe Extend Toolkit

Adobe Photoshop CS4 (sometimes)

I'm wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar or has any suggestions as to what's going wrong. I suspect it may have something to do with AppleScript, or with the interaction between AppleScript and Adobe's JavaScript engine, as I'm working on a project to automate certain tasks in InDesign. That seems to be the only common denominator, and I don't recall any apps which are not part of this project doing the same. Note that this is happening with the apps basically idle. It doesn't happen after a specific operation, which would make it easy to trace, but maybe an hour after I've stopped working on the project and am doing something else like writing a report.

Thoughts? Suggestions? (I know: quit when you're done. But I've grown used to leaving everything I use open. I could do this with Snow Leopard for a month at a time.)

I might post this as a separate topic, but I really wish Apple would add the ability to limit CPU usage. I wish I could set alerts and caps for the system as a whole and for specific processes. I've had other issues in the past with run away apps, and it's a problem if you happen to walk away for a moment only to come back and find your MacBook at 90C with the battery rapidly draining. Spotlight is one of the worst offenders. Flash on Firefox is another.

I upgraded to Lion (10.7.3) last night (from a bang-up-to-date Snow Leopard). Then I did the Firmware update and everything and set up iCloud.

I also saw CPU averaging betwen 95 - 120 % usage by Finder. All the time (MacMini 2011 model with 4GB RAM).

There was a Finder window in the background sitting on the 'All My Files' item. I clicked on 'Documents' and Finder dropped to 2 - 4 %.

Clicking back on 'All My Files' takes it right back up.

Don't know why it happens but I found out how to stop it so I'm relaxed for now.

I would like your help. I am having troubles with iTunes hogging the cpu. I tried both the guest account and the safe mode login. Both of these techniques resulted in iTunes running beautifully. I followed the 5-step diagnosis tool next and below are the results:

The Finder should not be hogging 100% of my CPU usage just because it's "always running". And there are plenty of other OS Xservices and apps always running that don't up 100% of the CPU.

Please don't paraphrase me, I did not say that Finder is causing 100% CPU use, I said that it always appears involved because it is ALWAYS running.

Hi !

I'm also having exactly the same issue described in post #1

(not with the same processes of course, but the same behaviour (and always finder).

What I do when it occurs is terminate all running processes and then restart the finder, after that I can work again and relaunch my applications without any problem.

It's happening since the Lion upgrade (i'm using a macbook pro late 2008). Neither 10.7.3 nor 10.7.4 upgrade did change anything to this problem.

I also suspect something related to the disconnection of the second screen (or perhaps to disconnection of the battery charger, because I often do both at the same time). But in my case I do not use 2d screen with closed MDP: i leave my MBP open and use it as a second screen.

The "100% CPU phenonenum" occurs always some time (little time I would say) after such a disconnection.

Here is below the result of the '5 step diagnosis' (Btw i'm not sure it has anything to do with some "external" application, because the problem occured just afer Lion upgrade without another change in my installed application)

Note2: in the list below I can find some 'oldies' I did not use anymore (and that I've deinstalled long time ago), like VBOX*

Hello,

FWIW, when this happened to me, it was due to Preview being open (I had a few large PDF's I had been editing); and it kept writing snapshots:

Oct 27 10:47:03 darcy Preview[47021]: snapshot of document took: 0.00224799 secs, calling unblockUserInteraction

Oct 27 10:47:05 darcy Preview[47021]: writing of document took: 1.2488 secs, success = YES

Oct 27 10:47:21 darcy Preview[47021]: writing of document took: 1.2004 secs, success = YES

Oct 27 10:47:37 darcy Preview[47021]: writing of document took: 1.21536 secs, success = YES

Remember also that MacOS has a very handy dtrace tool which will allow you to look into various aspects of what the system is doing.

Read more on Brendan Gregg's log: http://dtrace.org/blogs/brendan/2011/10/10/top-10-dtrace-scripts-for-mac-os-x/ which should give quite a few good answers to many of the issues posted in this thread.

Kind regards,
