Has anyone experienced download failure with Fringe Season 4 Enemy of My Enemy episode?

I have purchased the season pass for "Fringe" season 4 (2011-2012) and I am having a problem downloading a specific episode - "Enemy of My Enemy" which aired Friday January 20 and was available for download on Saturday January 21. I have been completely unable to successfully download this episode - and only this episode. Since the first failure, iTunes has successfully downloaded the following items, all also purchased via a season pass: "Criminal Minds" (air date 2012-01-25), "Big Bang Theory" (air date 2012-01-26), and the latest episode of "Fringe" (air date 2012-01-27).

I have submitted a support request to Apple and have received so far one response - I have attempted all of the suggestions and reviewed the link (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2384) and nothing has worked. I have attempted to download the episode to a Windows 7 machine - same failure. I have attempted to download the episode to a different Mac - same failure.

The end result of each attempt has been either an error "50" or an error "8008" after approximately 500 Mb of the episode is downloaded (out of approximately 1.4 Gb total). I have changed the download from an external drive to an internal drive, and still get the same error.

Only this one episode of this one show am I experiencing failure.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, and I would especially appreciate hearing either from anyone experiencing the same problem with this episode, or anyone who has successfully downloaded this episode.

Thank you.

I did neglect to mention that the download consisted of two files, one of which was successfully downloaded (the smaller of the two). This may or may not be related to the fact that this is the HD version of the show. I've received another email from Apple support this morning, and have fired off a reply giving precise information as to what has worked and what hasn't (I get the feeling that they only skim over the text and don't really pay attention to every detail, so I think they're hearing "....error....downloading......" and they go through their usual list of responses - the first of which is "please remove any virus protection software or ad blockers or firewall or..." which totally ignores the fact that 3 other episodes download perfectly fine in the week since the first screwup).

But thank you for your response, it's great to hear that it's not just me! 😎

I'm having the same problem. And there is another discussion on the same problem. I have notified iTunes store support and received a credit for the episode. But the issue appears to be with the file. I confirmed that I could log onto my account, I downloaded other iTunes content including other TV episodes. I confirmed firewall settings and even temporarily disabled my virus protection. After each failure I moved the downloads folder to the trash, closed and reopened iTunes, and experienced the problem again. I most recently tried Preferences/Advanced/Reset all dialog warnings and Reset iTunes Store cache and restarted iTunes. All without success. BTW, I could stream the HD version on AppleTV but noticed a quality anomaly, sorry can't remember the exact moment.

I'm not sure if that's all there is. My problems started on January 25, earlier than this weekend. Although I did not physically remove my Symantec product, Norton Anti Virus 12.1, I did disable virus protection and vulnerability protection while trying to download the Fringe HD file. And with Anti Virus up and running, I did download the latest Fringe episode this weekend, both HD and SD, as well as four other TV episodes. I still believe that the problem is in the file and wish that someone at the iTunes store could check to confirm. After reading other discussion threads, I've tried a few other tricks and gotten some other results, an err = -8008 message or an interruption that puts me at a different stop point than 500.2 MB, but I always end up where I started with the err = -50 and the 500.2 MB stop point.

I'm trying it again now, as I write, with the protections disabled...and it just failed again!

Had a new email from Apple support - and I think they finally believe the problem is at their end. Definitely complain to them if you are still unable to download, reference this thread and tell them to talk to me 😉 if they're uncertain.

Please note that I am very certain that anti-virus, ad-blocker, firewall, and other software is not the reason the file is un-downloadable. The fact that three other episodes, including the episode following "Enemy" have downloaded, strongly suggests that the problem is not in the receiving computer, it's in the file. And having tried multiple OSes (OS X 10.7.2, Win7) and multiple ISPs (DSL and Cable) and multiple machines (iMac, MacBook, self-made Win7), and failed on each one, again suggests that the problem is not at my - or your - end. This is an Apple-created disaster.

I respect Apple and its products and its ability to deliver on its promises. I will continue to purchase iTunes downloads because I like what I get. This particular instance is just an annoyance, and I look forward to Apple resolving this issue once and for all.

Just wanted to mention that I'm experiencing exactly the same problem as everyone else here—only the HD version of this one episode fails, and it fails every time (I've tried on 3 Macs) at 500.2 or 500.3 MB. I wrote to Apple support and got their standard boilerplate message assuring me that it must be one of many user errors, and I've written back to assure them that I checked all that and it wasn't. (Unlike some folks here, I don't have Symantec Internet Security, or any similar software, installed.) Haven't yet received any follow-up communication.

Here's hoping Apple figures it out soon.

Update: I have now successfully downloaded the HD version of "Enemy of My Enemy." However, I can't say what happened to make this possible.

After complaining to Apple and failing to get any meaningful response, I waited about 12 hours and then tried again to resume the download with Store > Check for Available Downloads and again got the same -50 error message. Tried a few times, in fact.

Then, just for fun, although I'd already tried this several times previously, I quit iTunes, deleted my ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Downloads folder, and reopened iTunes. Then I again chose Store > Check for Available Downloads. While the download was in progress, I paused it and resumed it several times, because it seemed to be going very slowly and sometimes I've found that when I pause and resume, downloads go more quickly afterwards. That was the case again with this file. Once it was going at a good clip, I held my breath as it approached the 500.2 MB mark, but the download just zipped right past and continued all the way to the end.

It may have been that Apple actually listened to us and fixed a broken file on their end. (However, even if so, something is still not right, because we shouldn't continue getting the -50 error messages when we try to resume partially downloaded files.) Another possibility, and this is purely speculation, is that when you pause and resume, sometimes the download resumes from a different server. If that is the case, then it's conceivable that at least one server has always had a broken file and at least one has always had a good version, so that it was, and is, the luck of the draw as to which version gets sent to whom. But again, that's just a wild guess.

Good luck to all those still trying to download the file!

Hey Everyone,

I as well have had an issue downloading this particular episode of this particular show, in fact since i purchased the season pass, the next episode after Enemy of My Enemy downloaded just fine. I have gone back and forth with iTunes support trying various things (non of which worked) for the past few days.

Yesterday I recieved an email saying that the episode has been sent to the iTunes engineering department to see whats up. They reccommended checking back in about a week or two, and the episode shold be fixed and issues addressed.

I will say this though, the support via email from iTunes was stellar, they actually took into account what i tried, and what i was telling them was not working (rather than just hearing, "this should work" etc). They were prompt and shaped their ideas to my issues, rather than just send me to a link that could be found online. In short, they were actually invested in solving the problem.

Hope any of that provided some help.

I also raised this with customer services, and after replying to their standard response including a link to this discussion, I was refunded the full amount for the entire season immediately with no fuss.

I've had this level of service before, and I think a combination of being a long-time customer (I have bought at least 50 TV series from iTunes over the last 5 years and maybe double that in Albums in the last 8 years) and being very polite to the customer service person, contributed to that result.

I have the same problem as all of you and iTunes refunded me for "Enemy of My Enemy" a week ago. I repurchased the episode again thinking it should be fixed by now since it's about two weeks since the episode was made available. SD version of the episode still downloaded fine. HD version of the episode stopped and gave me "err=-50" when I was at 440 MB into the file, which is even worse than before when it was able to reach 510 MB before stopping. Has anyone been able to successfully finish downloading the HD version of "Enemy of My Enemy"?
