"Other" includes data such as settings, contacts, calendar events, notes, Safari bookmarks/history/cache, email and email attachments stored or cached on the iPhone, SMS/MMS/iMessages and attachments, and data stored by a 3rd party app. This may also include iOS, but not postive about that. Mine is currently 1.48 GB, which seems to have increased some in size with iOS 5.0.
Possible solution: Check /DCIM and all /tmp folders for lost files. Delete and re-sync.
My Others was up to 4.7GB. I did some searching with iFile or Cyberduck using SSH for large files and found a couple of video.mov files in /var/mobile/Media/DCIM that where not showing up in "iTunes" or "Photos". I also found a couple of applications with 1GB dumps in their /tmp folders. I assume that this is due to apps crashing or being buggy or not shutting down correctly. I downloaded these files with Cyberduck and they where usable files. I deleted them from the iOS5 directory with iFile, emptied the trash and re-synced with iTunes. I am back to 0.7GB of others without restoring.
Mine was 2.5GB ''OTHER'' the Yellow one....I went to my Youtube App and cleared History and now its 0.40GB
Step1 Open ur Youtube App
Step2 Tap on More
Step3 Tap History
Step4 Tap Clear
Step5 Sync ur Iphone
this sounds helpful. can it be translated to mac osx instructions please? i tried restoring, didnt work (have 8.8 gigs of yellow "other"). much thanks.
I'm sorry, I'm too lazy to sift through this thread. (Sorry) My 'Other' is 8 GB. 😐 I do attach pictures to a good portion of my contacts. And I have a lot of notes. Any thoughts, ideas? I'm currently in the process of restoring my phone.
Hmph, a restore from my last backup didn't work. But it's down to 6 GB! Should I just start from scratch?
Try this: On your phone go to Settings>General> Usage
You may also need to press 'show all aps'.
Are there any apps showing unusually large data usage?
Also, on the Settings page, you may want to go to Safari and 'clear history'.
My iphone 5 reads 5 gigs of other data. I've tryed deleating stuff. I tryed restore. My phone isn't jailbroken so icicle is out the question. This is keeping me from downloading new apps. ******* me off really! Any ideas?
I had the same problem; the category "other" was sucking up all my memory and in the end, I couldn't even record videos, since there was no capacity left. I tried looking online for solutions and got all kinds of "synchronize", "restore" and "jailbreak" advice - none of which were helpful.
The reason: the "other" stuff turns out to be stuff logged in past imessages etc. There were many images/videos I had sent and received - they took up lots of space.
Solution: delete all sms/imessage conversations.
"Other" has gone from 3 Gig to 637 Mb.
After all, who needs to re-view a video sent to a friend three months ago anyway ...
Busyguy, can you please explain how to check all /DCIM and /tmp folders? My other bar is up to 5.74 gigs and it's killing my ability to use my iPhone 5. I've dumped all videos, notes, sms and imessages, unnecessary apps, etc. It's not going down at all. What exactly is iFile and Cyberduck? Are they mobile apps or Mac apps?
Thanks.
It can't mean, my contacts, and calendar info. I am not Steve Jobs, I only have probably 100 contacts, and my calendar only goes back to last year. How can my other capacity take up all of my entire iPod space. I deleted two older apps, and voila space was opened up. It looks like at least on my iMac the color coding of available iPod space is screwy. Also the synch bar in iTunes shows no photos, or music, just all other in yellow. I'm completely confused. Does anyone know why this might, be, or if their are any possible solutions for this.
