What laws would there be against OS upgrades?

Features not allowed in certain countries (like Facetime here in Oman) are blocked per feature.

I doubt signing is country-specific. How would Apple keep track of your location? The IP address of your PC/Mac? Or the iTunes user you're logged in with? This is probably model specific. Like when iOS 4.0 was released, iPhone 3G users suffered big performance problems. Because of this Apple re-opened signing of iPhone OS 3.1 for a short time until iOS 4.1 was released.

And I expect signing of 4.3.5 to have stopped long time ago. It doesn't matter what OS is already on the phone. If the image you're trying to install is no longer being signed by Apple then the upgrade will fail.

The reason that I believe that you are wrong is because Apple has legal obligations, first off in the USA, to provide support for the products it sells for a set number of years after a model is deprecated. The iPhone 3G cannot be upgraded to iOS 5. So iOS 4.3.5 is the last iOS to which it can be upgraded. Apple has a legal obligation to the owners of those phones worldwide to still be able to upgrade to that version of iOS, regardless of what the current iOS may be for other versions of the iPhone. I believe that Apple is still signing 4.3.5.

But this is all specualtion, even on my part. So we need the OP, or someone else, to give it a try and tell us if it did or if it did not work. I cannot do it, my iPhone is a 4S!

I'm just wondering how Apple will keep track of my location for the purpose of firmware signing... If they check my IP address then I'd like a VPN account to that country! If they check my iTunes ID then there's nothing stopping me from creating a new ID with a different residence address. If either of these cases were true, I think this nonsense of collecting SHSH blobs before upgrading would not be needed.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. 4.2.1 is the end of the line for the 3G. Apple is NOT signing 4.3.5.

OK, you made the claim. Provide proof. A citation of any law or laws from at least 3 countries that substantiate your claim will do.

You are correct regarding the final iOS version for the iPhone 3G, I stand corrected.

I am not a lawyer and do not know where to look for the laws covering such requirements. I know that my local authorized Apple Service Provider has mentioned a number of times the fact that he has to keep parts on hand or have an Apple source for the parts for older Apple models because of the legal requirements to continue to service them.

Insults from a man in a skirt! I hope that you wear boxers lassie.

Where is your link to where Apple states it no longer signs the update?

I see a number of folks saying that it cannot be done. That has been my experience here in the ASC on a number of topics. Others came back and reported that what was said could not be done actually worked. I am waithing for the OP or someone else reading this thread to report that it was tried and that it did not work.

Apple specifically states that downgrading is NOT supported. I understand that the OP is trying to upgrade, but if that link is available to the public, then ANYONE can download it, whether they are upgrading or downgrading. And Apple doesn't want people downgrading, so if that link is legit, Apple is contradicting themselves.

And insulting a man's undergarments hardly complies with the TOU.
