This is what I think could have happened;
1. The lawn ornament is a very contrary person who mostly likes to go around being negative and posting RTFM-style comments.
2. On the weekend there appear to be less forum hosts working and they are pressed for time.
3. I believe that the garden ornament falsely reported what my comment was and a busy host mistakenly removed it without verifying that was what I had done.
Of course I have no way to actually verify that was what occurred.
One legitimate reason for downgrading to a previous release is to avoid new bugs!
I downgraded my iPhone 4 back 4.3.5 shortly after iOS 5 was released after I saw a problem with incoming calls shown as the phone number instead of the name even though it is saved in Contacts. (I have to save all contacts twice: with and without country code to make this work. Downgrading back to 4.3.5 fixed this.
You can download old OS images as much as you want, but once Apple stops signing an old OS release there is no way you can downgrade your phone without resorting to unofficial/unsupported/warranty-voiding methods.
But downgrading the iOS is NOT what is being discussed here and it IS inappropriate to encourage folks to do so in the Apple Support Communities, no matter how justified you think doing it may be.
Why then download an old iOS release - if not for downgrading your phone? You could not use it even if upgrading from an even older release installed on the phone.
Nether me, dahveed or the op talked about downgrading. We're talking about updating. Read the whole post before replying
Namely updating from 4.1 to 4.3.5. Reason being is that the op may not want to deal with its 5 problems they may encounter.
Updating? To what release? Dahveed is presenting a link to 4.3.5. You can't install this as Apple has stopped signing this release. You can only install the latest.
I think that you folks are in error as to whether Apple has "stopped signing" this version of iOS. There are potentially still millions of iPhone 3Gs out there in developing nations that may be at a lower version of the iOS and are elligible to be updated to 4.3.5. Because the folks have not been able to update their phone in a timely manner, does Apple abandon these users? I believe no.
You may be right dahveed. Apple did say they where rolling it out. That could mean that some countrys may still be stuck at 4.3.5. So to the OP try dahveeds link and see if it works for you.
Your right dahveed there is a few country's that still sighn it
Freaking autocorrect.
While no credible sources are listed, this explains why Apple does not sign older versions of iOS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SHSH_blob
Maybe it is different for users in other countries...
The OP is not trying to downgrade, the OP is wanting to upgrade. Based on the information in this article, signing seems to be an active process and as long as the phone meets the criteria, there is no reason that I can see that would cause Apple not to issue the signature for the OP's phone for this upgrade.
Like I said dahveed is correct there are a few country's life that can not update past 4.3.5 due to local laws.
