TV show won't play on iTunes- black screen

I bought a TV show from iTunes, but it won't play. I've downloaded the latest versions of Quicktime and iTunes, and both programs are updated. The screen is black when I press play- the ticker runs but no audio/video.

Can you play the video in QuickTime? Try right clicking the video and choosing the option to show in Explorer. Then right click the video and open with QuickTime Player.

Mine was finally solved. I contacted Apple and asked their help.

Essentially this is what they said, please update your mac to the newest system (in this case to El Captain). And this will solve your problem with watching the shows. I asked her why is this happening. She said, it's a bug they planted into tv shows, so we'd have to upgrade the system before we can see the show. I did it, and it's working fine now.

This is a 2016 post QuickTime for Windows follow-up:

I don't know why iTunes suddenly stopped playing my video today - it's worked for 12 years without a glitch. The only thing "different" that I did was replace the thermal paste on my CPU. How that could cause the problem is beyond me.

Anyway, I resolved my problem by uninstalling both Flash Player and iTunes, rebooting after the uninstalls and then re-installing Flash Player and iTunes. The black screen went away.
