AirPort Utility 5.6 vs. 6.0

Could someone explain the differences between the 2 different versions of the Airport Utility updates for Lion posted today on Apple's support website? Version 5.6 can be found here and version 6.0 can be found here. The descriptions are quite different and my Software Update app shows only v.6.0. When I first manually installed the dmg for v.5.6 (to keep the versions in incremental order), it installed it besides my previous AirPort Utility (v.5.5.3) and named it 'AirPort Utility 5.6', quite an unusual behaviour for a Mac OS X component. Then, when I updated via Software Update, as expected, the 6.0 updated the 5.5.3 but the 5.6 remains next to it.

Does the 6.0 includes all the bug fixes of the 5.6 and can I put 5.6 in the trash without any problem? I did not update my AirPort Extreme and Express firmwares to v.7.6.1 yet as I am confused with the Airport Utility separate updates.

5.6 is for Macs running Lion to administer older 'b/g" AirPort devices. If you don't have any older "b/g" AirPorts, no need to install this software.

6.0 is for Macs running Lion to administer newer "n" devices.

7.6.1 is for "n" devices.

If you have both "b/g" and "n" Apple routers, you will have to keep both versions on your Mac and choose the one that you need at the time.

On your iphone, go to settings, general, reset. and choose reset network settings. It will erase any wifi passwords you have stored and should get it working again. You'll need to reinter your wifi password so write it down.

That didn't work either. But I just figured it out in case anyone else has this issue. I changed my network name to a name with no spaces and it connected.

Hi All,

AU v6 is good really god for regular user. However if your advanced or kind of guru i will find it useless. here is why:

  • if you have printer connected over USB to AirPort, you cannot enable or disable printer sharing.
  • No way to turn off/on 5GHz transmitter.
  • No Syslog and SNMP configuration.

If you will switched to AU 5.6 you will get back most of functionality which we have before Jan 30st, 12 (release date for AU 5.6 and 6 also for Firmware update 7.6.1

I get in to problems with SNMP monitoring. Before it is working perfectly but after updating AU and Firmware I have no respond from AirPort Extreme's SNMP.

"mac address filter in AU 6 it's really no more available?"

My initial impression has been corrected in another thread. MAC address filtering is indeed available in AU 6.0. Here's where:

AU v6.0:

Network tab:

√ Enable Timed Access:

Click the 'Timed Access Control' button:

+ Wireless Clients:

Fill in the 'Description' and 'MAC Address':

Set the 'Wireless Access Times'.

I am a bit disturbed to report that Apple has REMOVED Airport Utility v5.6 from its Downloads list. 😟

I am HOPING that they are going to rewrite their wrong information about v5.6, but checking its description page they so far have not changed it. 😟

Therefore, users who don't like v6.0 won't even know that v5.6 is available and superior. Why did this happen?

In the spirit of overcoming adversity, I am making sure the URL to the Airport Utility v5.6 page is at least available here. 😎
