Help - iTunes can't locate music files on drive!

The list of my songs in iTunes has an exclamation mark on all of them. This indicates the the locations could not be found on mt drive.

I tried to re-establish the link, but get an error "Program has stopped working....windows now closing program" and iTunes shuts down.

I have all my songs arranged in a folder with each folder for an album. How do I delete the current library an rebuild with the original music folder?

Thanks.

This happens if the files are no longer where iTunes expects to find them. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the files, or that the drive they live on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.

Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.

Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes.

that didnt work the findtracks page wont pull. "problem loading page" is the error. Originally on my old computer i had 2 separte folders outside my itunes folder where my music was kept, both on the c drive. I consolidated files into 1 folder and then copied the folder under itunes music folder. So at this point every song that i am looking for is under 1 folder. this is the location where it thinks the file is

I have the external drive, but that new folder music has a new name.

i went thru preferences and changed the media file location to the drive on the computer that contains all my music. i press ok and it says updating library. it removes the ⚠ from abt 40 songs but all of them are in the same folder.

If i go thru and locate 1 song, again in the same folder as all of my music, i can find the song. itunes then ask me if i want to use the same location to try and locate the rest. I say yes and then it says it can't find any of the music. the reason is that its only looking in the sub folder (Artist>>Album>>Name) instead of looking thru the parent folder.

HELP ME PLEASE!!

This should be direct link to the FindTracks script. Can you download that to your desktop? If so what happens when you double-click on it to run it? If you get an error message could I have the precise message including line number. If it works you need to pick the parent folder for the files you are trying to collect so if the missing media is in, for example, E:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\<Artist>\<Album>\##<Name> but on the second dialog box the script offers to look in E:\New MediaMusic then you need to edit that value to E:\iTunes\iTunes Media.

Hmm, odd not to find the actual song as well as some other potential matches. I've been contemplating adding a test for file size which should reduce the need to pick from a selection, but could you show me the Get Info details for that tracks and its actual filename in Windows Explorer just so I can get my head around what is happening there?
