Process to connect external speakers on MAC Pro Desktop

I am having the darndest time connecting external speakers to my Mac Pro desktop. (To listen to i-Tunes)....there is only one minijack output for external speakers. I looked at my 'sound'/preference settings and everything looks right. Any one who can assist me, I would be appreciative!

Something so simple is racking my engineering knowledge!!

Thanks,

Peter

Connect the speakers to the 3.5mm (1/8") audio output jack in the back of your mac pro. Disconnect the headphones in you have them plugged into the front of your mac pro. Set sound system preferences for line out.

Note, you probably need some kind of amplifed speakers (or a separate amplifier) to get enough volume from the line out jack. Also make sure you are not confusing the line out jack with the microphone input jack.
