well, its a 7day trial. I thought about it too but realized some powered plug in speakers would cost me at least $10 + batteries if theyre battery powered. Iv been using it for last night and today, awesome app that really does boost super low audio in videos and has a great EQ too. You can even drop a file into it and boost an MP3 or something. Definately worth the $7. Try the trial and you will see.

The sound level has long been my only issue with my macbook. It's very annoying to not be able to hear anything if your computer is more than an arms length away from you.

I found this walkthrough on how to create an equalizer (similar to the one available in iTunes) for all audio output on your mac, and it's finally fixed the issue for me.

You will need to download two freeware apps (Soundflower from google code, and AU Lab from apple developers) and it's very easy and fairly quick to assemble.

Hope this helps.

The only decent freeware I've found so far is VLC media player, which allows you to turn the volume up to 200%, boosting the speakers much louder than normal. Of course, this only works if you're actually watching/listening to something through VLC media player. So it's fine for downloaded movies or things, but it doesn't help for watching Netflix of Youtube videos.

I tried Boom and it helped. I bought it. Then they sent an update and it stopped working. I've corresponded with them 3 times and tried their email suggestions. Nothing has worked so far. It just loops in the opening video and doesn't work. They aren't able (or willing?) to work with me on the phone or Skype. I haven't tried their last suggestion because it is very complex and assumes I know things that I'm not that technically sophistocated to do. If it eventually works again, i'll post Anyone else have the same problem? |I think something they included in the app and/or the update messes it up, but I don't know.

Well just like you've mentioned about unistalling and reinstalling, I have, of course, tried that way but unfortunately, after doing that twice you can't do it again and again. Isn't it obvious that if this was the way out then nobody would have bought the product? 🙂 well, I got the same problem regarding my speakers sound in mac, have you got an alternate way out? I'd really appreciate your ideas 🙂

@Harlan Johnson

I am with you on this. I do not want to buy an app to fix an OS issue that should not be there in the first place.

VLC can go to 200% gain (about 130~150% makes most movies pleasantly audiable). Very often maxing out iTunes, Netflix or Youtube plus the onboard volume control is not sufficiet for comfortable listening without straining to hear what is being said. There is nothing wrong with the speaker hardware and clearly no danger of hearing damage or speaker damage at 100% or even 200% of standard gain in the modern macbook pro. The OS gain levels are just too **** low.

I tried Boom and it coincided with (probably caused) the sound settings hanging (no sound from internal speakers at all, system stuck trying to route sound to "digital out"). Boom is unacceptable.

APPLE !!!!! I / We need a sudo command or some such that permits greater amp gain for internal speakers or a OS update that does the same thing. Perhaps unlocking Audiio Midi Setup to allow a positive number to be entered in the box next to the gain for internal speakers output. I don't care if I have to click a check box to sign off on the possibility of straining onboard hardware. I just want it to work.

Thanks. (urgently)

This is free and it works:

It is still a workaround.

From what I can understand, there is a limitation on output defined somehow in System/Library/Extensions/appleHDA.kext

There are various descriptions of how to edit the info.plist files of some parts of the package contents but something has changed since Moutain Lion such that those instructions are no longer relevant. It woud be great if someone could shed some light on how to edit a .plist file to simply give the volume control more headroom.

I am quite deaf, 77 and wear two hearing aids. When I watch anything, I take out the hearing aids and put in Bose earbuds but still strain to catch a lot of the words. I thought that was my problem with the Pro until I searched for something to increase the volume on this machine and took the 7 day free trial with Boom. The first episode of Game of Thrones season 4 went straight over my head without Boom. The second episode with Boom? Absolutely effing magic! Now I am going to try Hear. Thanks for this thread.
