I have an old iPhone 3G (actually it may be a 3, I can't tell). Anyway, I updated it to the latest software, it flushed everything and now wants to activate it. However, it won't activate it without a SIM card. Keeps asking me to insert it. I don't have one, and don't want to activate it that way. Just want to use it as basically an iPod. Anyone know how to deal with that?
Use a sim from the wireless provider the iPhone is locked to.
did you use an at&t one or just any old one?
I am having the same problem my sim tray is broken I want to activate it any way I can

Your phone is carrier locked. Only the carrier it's locked to can authorize removal of the lock. Contact them. If you don't know who it's locked to , ask whoever you got the phone from or call AppleCare and give them the serial number.
