iphone volume slider has disappeared

The volume slider on my iphone has disappeared and it wont play music from itunes, apps, videos or anything else I've tried. I have tried using the external volume controls on the side and its not on silent. I have also tried resetting a couple of times but this hasn't helped.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

Haha I was dealing with the same problem today

The volume would only work when the headphones were plugged in

And as soon as i took them out, the volume control went missing o.o

So as it turned out, it's either that your 32pin port is clogged up with dirt

Or you've somehow got water on your device so that the it thinks its connected to the doc.

Just take a thin brush and slide it across the pin port to remove the dust

Then with your finger or a small object, press down lightly on the sides

Hopefully, your colume control shoould be back :)

I had the same problem and I've spent all day with Verizon & Apple trying to fix this issue. Then I read below to try a fine paint brush and see if any debris was in the dock port and there was. After dusting it out the volume sliding bar appeared. I can once again listen to my music and Pandora Radio. I can't believe this worked!!!

I was having all the problems everyone has talked about above. Volume bar would show up intermittently, I would have to unplug then plug my earphones back in to get it back so I could listen through the ear plugs. I could charge it on my dock but can't play music on it through the dock.

A friend had accidently spilled red wine on my phone the night before I was to fly out of the country for a couple of weeks, it had a pretty good case on it, and everything seemed to be working so I didn't worry about it. Then it started showing the warning that its connected with something not compatable, even though nothing was plugged in.

My fiance pulled the phone apart, gave it a good clean out (as people here had suggested). It didn't help. He then pulled it further apart and saw that there were some plugs in the dock connecter that were burnt. He said it would have been caused by the wine, the dock connected part getting wet, and shorting out.

So I have ordered a new dock connector assembly part, he is fairly certain that will fix. Will update when we get it (hopefully in a few days)

Hi, I had the same problem and I have managed to fix it by, I know you may not want to do this but, puting a blunt knife in the bottom port and slightly pushing up the connecter, it seems to have worked !!! 🙂 just a suggestion 🙂

A really BAD IDEA to use any metallic tool like a blunt knife to apply pressure around the dock connector. Briefly shorting the wrong pins together can and will damage the phone.

I would suggest doing exactly as you stated but use a non-metallic tool like a plastic or wood blade. Same benefit without the risk.

It happened to my iPad2 and after doing a little search on internet i saw that many people solved the issue cleaning the dock, blowing air into it.

I used a business card, some paper towel and a cheap display cleaner. I cleaned the dock (quite energically i must say) for a couple of minutes and everything got normal. The slft slider is back and the hard volume is controlling it normally.

This sound weird but cleaning the dock is the solution.

Restoring and hard rebooting the machine won't solve this issue at all so don't waste your time looking for digital solutions but use the old good elbow grease :)

The only way I can get sound playing back through its external speaker from my iPad (other than pluggin in my headphones) is if I plug in my HDMI adapter. Model number A1388. I don't have to plug in an HDMI cable nor do I have to plug it to a TV, but as soon as I plug that adapter in, all sound comes back as if it was normal. But if I take the adapter out, the iPad goes mute again - volume slider gone, volume rocker does not respond, etc.

This is pesky. It's a hardware and OS bug. If the OS team is watching this - this needs to be fixed!

I agree, deff a harware/software problem. I went to an apple store today and some "genius" (oh, how ironic) told me that I had water damage and that it short circuited my volume controls and that my volume wouldn't work for adjusting it while on a phone call either. BS, I can adjust volume then, just can't while listening to music/watching videos without being plugged into a dock or listening via headphones. From reading other forums, I see so many people with this problem. I blame IOS 5.1.1! For the love of all that is good in the world, Apple needs to fix this now and retrain their employees. Freaking apple store tried to charge me $200 for repair!!!

iphone volume slider has disappeared
