iphone volume slider has disappeared

The volume slider on my iphone has disappeared and it wont play music from itunes, apps, videos or anything else I've tried. I have tried using the external volume controls on the side and its not on silent. I have also tried resetting a couple of times but this hasn't helped.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

Haha I was dealing with the same problem today

The volume would only work when the headphones were plugged in

And as soon as i took them out, the volume control went missing o.o

So as it turned out, it's either that your 32pin port is clogged up with dirt

Or you've somehow got water on your device so that the it thinks its connected to the doc.

Just take a thin brush and slide it across the pin port to remove the dust

Then with your finger or a small object, press down lightly on the sides

Hopefully, your colume control shoould be back :)

Hi, I had the same problem and I have managed to fix it by, I know you may not want to do this but, puting a blunt knife in the bottom port and slightly pushing up the connecter, it seems to have worked !!! 🙂 just a suggestion 🙂

A really BAD IDEA to use any metallic tool like a blunt knife to apply pressure around the dock connector. Briefly shorting the wrong pins together can and will damage the phone.

I would suggest doing exactly as you stated but use a non-metallic tool like a plastic or wood blade. Same benefit without the risk.

It happened to my iPad2 and after doing a little search on internet i saw that many people solved the issue cleaning the dock, blowing air into it.

I used a business card, some paper towel and a cheap display cleaner. I cleaned the dock (quite energically i must say) for a couple of minutes and everything got normal. The slft slider is back and the hard volume is controlling it normally.

This sound weird but cleaning the dock is the solution.

Restoring and hard rebooting the machine won't solve this issue at all so don't waste your time looking for digital solutions but use the old good elbow grease :)

The only way I can get sound playing back through its external speaker from my iPad (other than pluggin in my headphones) is if I plug in my HDMI adapter. Model number A1388. I don't have to plug in an HDMI cable nor do I have to plug it to a TV, but as soon as I plug that adapter in, all sound comes back as if it was normal. But if I take the adapter out, the iPad goes mute again - volume slider gone, volume rocker does not respond, etc.

This is pesky. It's a hardware and OS bug. If the OS team is watching this - this needs to be fixed!

I agree, deff a harware/software problem. I went to an apple store today and some "genius" (oh, how ironic) told me that I had water damage and that it short circuited my volume controls and that my volume wouldn't work for adjusting it while on a phone call either. BS, I can adjust volume then, just can't while listening to music/watching videos without being plugged into a dock or listening via headphones. From reading other forums, I see so many people with this problem. I blame IOS 5.1.1! For the love of all that is good in the world, Apple needs to fix this now and retrain their employees. Freaking apple store tried to charge me $200 for repair!!!

Yep cleaning it with a toothbrush works to get the volume control button working again. I could adjust volume on my phone while talking on the phone and also listening to music but only when earplugs were plugged in. I was unable to adjust volume watching videos or listening to music without earplugs. Solution is to clean the bottom of the phone (docking port/charger plug in). I got a clean soft bristle toothbrush and scrubbed back and forth for about a minute or so. Blew the dust and debris out. Then I sprayed Endust for Electronics (http://endustforelectronics.com/097000.php) on the end of a q-tip then squeezed off excess solution so that the q-tip is just damp. Pull down the cotton so it fits in between and be sure to scrub off those four metal pieces inside the port. Get your toothbrush and scrub again, blow air inside and Voila!!! Worked like a charm. Definitely give it some elbow grease!!

michelecarlesi's method worked perfectly- I used a business card but cut it to a bit smaller than the size of the dock connector. I fold it one time to get more strength then wet it with 70% alcohol (not soak) and rubbing both side of the connector. I cleaned thr connector 4-5 times with new piece of paper. Like michelecarlesi said do not bother trying restoring, hard bootong, or reset the setting, they do not work and you waste your time.

I solved this problem. just push 32pin port toward home button. I first tried clean port but not worked.

Second tried connect with connector strong tight. so it worked! but several second later volume bar disappear again.

So I think this is 32pin port problem. So I tried using my nail to 32pin port pushing. volumbar appeared.

My Ipad problem is pin port loosing.

In my case it was also a mechanical problem and nothing related to software. I wiggled a credit card in the dock connector and the sound came back momentarily. So I knew that the dock connector on my iPhone 4S had some bad contacts in there. The toothbrush alone didn't help at all but when I sprayed some WD-40 in the connector the sound came back immediately all by itself. Amazing. I keep my iPhone very clean so it wasn't dirt. It must have been simple oxidation. So take some contact spray like WD-40 and give it a try.

I had these same symtoms on my wife's iphone 4. It indeed thought that it was still hooked up to a docking device. I had tried updating and cleaning the port to no avail. I realized that it thought the phone was still in the docking device when I went to the music app and pressed the icon on the bottom right that looks like a rectangle with a triangle in it. It listed my apple TV and a docking device that had a check mark next to it. My wife had mentioned that the phone didn't work on her Altec Lansing speakers so I figured that I was on to something. I tried a bunch of things and had no sucess until I plugged the phone back into the docking device (the external speakers and adjusted the volume bar that now appeard on the phone.

It now works and when the eject(?) icon is pressed in the music app it displays "Iphone" with a check mark next to it. The "docking device" is gone.

Hope this helps someone else solve their problem.

Good luck to all!

just had the same problem, took phone to apple shop says it was water damage, which made the iphone think it was still docked and would cost £119 for a new phone, but fixed it with a simple interdental brush and magnifying glass, looking at the docking port with screen facing up, you will see a rectangular cut out, if its coloured purple then its meant to be water damage, but with a simple cleaning of this area, (I may add, i also cleaned all contacts and whole docking area) with the, "interdental Brush" you will get your volume slider back.

so i would say its not a hardware problem, as i reset, rebooted and restored and was on the verge of rebooting it right out the window when i decided to give it a clean,

this worked for me now enjoying my music headphone free,

cleaning the docking area is a delicate operation and is it your own risk, BE GENTLE
