iphone volume slider has disappeared

The volume slider on my iphone has disappeared and it wont play music from itunes, apps, videos or anything else I've tried. I have tried using the external volume controls on the side and its not on silent. I have also tried resetting a couple of times but this hasn't helped.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

Haha I was dealing with the same problem today

The volume would only work when the headphones were plugged in

And as soon as i took them out, the volume control went missing o.o

So as it turned out, it's either that your 32pin port is clogged up with dirt

Or you've somehow got water on your device so that the it thinks its connected to the doc.

Just take a thin brush and slide it across the pin port to remove the dust

Then with your finger or a small object, press down lightly on the sides

Hopefully, your colume control shoould be back :)

I had tried everything on these forums without success (other than taking it in for repairs), but then I tried one thing that cannot be posted here, and it's been great without incident.

I would call it a hardware and a software problem. The hardware is an issue because something, being dirty or corrosion, is giving the OS a false positive. The OS thinks there is an accessory attached and disables most sounds.

The fix is simple, but that's all I can say here.

It seems that this fault is very common with the traditional iPhone 26pin dock connector where some fluff or dust rests inside the port and creates a very small short circuit across some pins and cheats the iPhone/iPad into thinking its on a dock and thus making the volume slider within the software to disappear!!

The easy fix is to use a dry toothbrush and brush out any loose dust and blow into the dock connector to help move anything hiding inside. Clean the headphone socket too as it does no harm to clear all the dust from these small sockets.

Don't use anything metal or wet.

This should fix most problems related to missing volume slider on the iPhone and iPad with 26pin socket.

Good luck!

What must be done with the knife in there? It sounds a bit drastic to me.

After about 3 weeks without the volume slider and many, many, MANY different advises without success the phone dropped by accident from my pocket and viola back to normal it was.

So rather drop your phone (by accident) and hope it doesn't break the front or back glass covers!

All the best, I suppose my advise is as "sad" as the problem itself and the solution from Apple. It sounds as if it is not only a problem experienced by only one iPhone owner!?

I've been having the same problems with my 4s, however, plugging my headphones in doesn't work, the volume still disappears. I don't know if it is a coincidence, but my phone's battery is also dropping really fast without much use.

I did recently get water on it, but at the time it seemed that the case had prevented any water from going into the phone. It worked fine for a couple days after that. I've tried cleaning the dock port, and it hasn't worked. The dock had the purple marks in it like you mentioned, so does this mean I need to replace my dock?
