10.7.3 Breaks Network Connectivity iMac?

Hey guys,

My work computer updated to 10.7.3 in my 2010 iMac.

After restart, all network connectivity is down. It will not pick up an IP address via WiFi or Ethernet.

I cannot even connect to my Time Capsule to do a restore.

Any ideas?

Hey all,

For anyone who is interested, turns out my Firewall was off.

I am not sure why is was off, further more I am not sure why my Ethernet / WiFi would not pick up an IP address with the Firewall turned off.

Anyway, turning the Firewall back on seemed to fix things.

To confirm - it isn't limited to wireless; my Mac Pro is experiencing this problem on a wired connection.

With or without a fixed IP address, Internet traffic appears to be blocked. I do, however, seem to be able to connect to local IP addresses (in my case 192.168.1.x) - I haven't tried external addresses by IP address, but I will; even with a DNS server on the local network (ie. 192.168.1.1), addresses aren't being resolved.

It's not limited to wireless. I couldn't connect using an Ethernet cable, either, until I tried the firewall trick.

Prior to installing 10.7.3, I had the wi-fi problem waking from sleep, lots of connection timeouts,the inability to reliably connect to most public wi-fi's (such as at the library or coffee shops), and a really poor connection even when it did connect. All of which started when I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Lion. But if the moon was aligned just right and I waved a chicken over my head a few times and ate my veggies, I could occasionally get a wi-fi connection.

After installing 10.7.3, I couldn't connect at all using wired or wireless. For the record, this is not what I'd call an improvement. Yes, I can now use the firewall trick and get a connection, but it's a manual fix that needs to be repeated often. Not a true solution. And I haven't been out with my computer in the last 24 hours, so I don't yet know if I'll be able to connect anywhere else. We'll see about that tomorrow...

I found a fix for this issue, however it does take a little time, but at least you don't have to toggle the Firewall off and on everytime you restart. Boot to the Recovery HD by holding down Command-R during startup and then Reinstall Mac OS X. This installed 10.7.3 and now I don't have any issues with my network connectivity.

For those of you experiencing this issue, can you please check if you have the root-or-admin-or-authenticate-admin rule in /etc/authorization? It should look like this:

<key>root-or-admin-or-authenticate-admin</key>

<dict>

<key>class</key>

<string>rule</string>

<key>k-of-n</key>

<integer>1</integer>

<key>rule</key>

<array>

<string>is-root</string>

<string>is-admin</string>

<string>authenticate-admin-30</string>

</array>

</dict>

Sure enough... After installing the latest 10.7.3 update today, everything went SIDEWAYS! Absolutely bad timing because I had just started working on some DynDNS stuff. I spent about 3 hrs tweaking my ATT Uverse wondering what the **** was going on. Of course, I blame it on ATT and wouldn't have thought an Apple update would screw me like it did.

After Google'ing the 10.7.3 update I came across your post. Sure enough, changing my firewall "locked system preference" setting back to "on", fixed my problem in a heartbeat. What the ****, how does an update change a "locked system preference"!

Dammit... this blows... this is the same BS I used to deal with back in the Microsoft days! I used to always have a giddy positive feeling when Apple updates were available, always believing my computers were going to run much better. That's gone now... shattered! Updates won't be going on my boxes for at least a month from now on.

Sorry for ranting, I just hope others don't waste an entire afternoon like I did.

Sincerely,

Apple Confidence Shattered
