after Security update 2012-001 cannot save any Office 2004 file

I installed the Office 2012-001 Security Update on a MacBook Pro running Macos 10.6.8

After that, I opened an attached Excel file from an email (received with Entourage), I performed some formula changes and wanted to save the document with a different name. I saw some changes to the screen as if the File saving Window would appear, but instead the whole program crashed. I could not perform any further changes to the file, basically all of the menus were blank, including the Quit menu. I had to Force quit the program. I thought it was only Excel, but Word also behaves the same. I am able to open any Office file with the corresponding Pages-Numbers program and save the file in the appropriate Office format, but I cannot perform any changes using the Office programs. I am writing this question here on the Apple Support Communities because I am almost sure that this behavior happened after I installed the Security Update 2012-001. After reading some of the latest support questions, I performed a Permissions repair on the StartUp disk but nothing changed.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Thanks ds store that's what I had to do. I'm definitely going to be more deligent about my backups from know on since this nonsense took me a grand total of 7 hours to resolve. I help some hapless Windows friends of mine with their endless bugs from updates from time to time and have until now felt justified in crowing over the Mac OS stability. No More!

I have tested this on my Mac Pro

I have four 1000 gig hard drives

One Drive is used specifially for testing updates before I implement them to my other drives.

the security update 2012-001 was downloaded and installed specifically to test a problem that one of my clients reported to me..

It did exactly what he said it did to his machine.

It Crashed Ms Office 2004, Appleworks, Macromedia Freehand 11

several video pograms, Color It and has affected several other programs to one degree or another

I have this on video and If it is not fixed by the morning I will send the Video that I have made off to the media for immediately release.

I do not plan on reinstalling anything, it takes way too long.

To solve the reinstallation problems such as misplaced passwords, serials finding programs disks, setting up email progrrams and whatever else you might need in your machine.

I back up my computers with at least two seperate Cloned drives, which I can then clone back when needed

I do not want to do what the previous person did, spend 7 hours on reinstalling the operating system,

7 hours is too much time to waste..Especially when you can do it in about and hour and a half with one program.

I would rather spend my time writing stupid things likes this complaint because Apple messed up bigtime this time around.

(right!!!!)

I would rather be fishing or...

Learn how to clone your drives using the program Disk Utility the restore option

Just make sure you turn the energy saver options to never, and do not have any other applications running when you are restoring the drive to another drive, make turn off the screen saver also and it should work just fine.

Do not trust time machine it is only a partial file backup system, It may change someday but right now the only way to go is to clone your drive.

Even apple admits to some inefficiencies with Time Machine.

Practice practice until you know how to do it.

It will save you an unbelievable amount of time when you learn how to do it correctly.

no charge for mispelt works and puctuation

Why you would need to go through all of that stuff is beyond my ken.

Maybe more to the point is why anyone who depended on their Mac for income (or anything else important to them) would neglect to maintain a viable backup/restore strategy is completely beyond my understanding.

Even if Apple was capable of releasing 100% bug-free updates 100% of the time (which history tells us is not true) other factors beyond Apple's control can cause applying an update to go bad. (Consider for instance that it is the locally installed copy of the OS that is updating itself. That means a problem like file system corruption or anything else that affects the normal & expected operation of the OS can & often does cause problems with applying updates.)

For some, a TM restore might be adequate; for others reinstalling & updating to just before the problematic update might be enough. If the downtime of those options is unacceptable, a backup clone is the obvious choice.

But choosing no reliable restore strategy is extremely risky. Common sense alone should be enough to tell you this. Macs are machines. Machines break. Neither Apple nor any other software vendor guarantees their products to be 100% bug-free, nor can they. Regardless of what Apple does or doesn't do to remedy this issue or how long it takes to do it, if you don't already have such a strategy, now is the time to implement one.

Sooner or later, you will be glad you did.

I wonder why the offending security update has not yet been pulled from the servers!

It is possible that Apple feels the security vulnerabilities it patches are more important than the problems it causes with PPC apps, but that is just a guess.

But regardless, it is a serious consideration because Apple published a list of the vulnerabilities it patches & that information could be exploited by malware writers almost immediately.

I found a solution on this discussion (in french but if you want I can traslate that for you) with the help of Lionel (check on the discussion) !

My MS Office 2004 is now working again and Rosetta is fully OK.

If you want a traduction of the solution, ask me !

You just need a "new" framework (offered by Lionel on this discussion) and reboot your engine (and maybe use Utility's Repair Disk Permissions feature).

My MS Office 2004 works perfectly, thanks to the Mac users (and not Appel 😠)

I only can agree to LeonGambetta,

the discussions on http://forum.macbidouille.com/index.php?showtopic=354758&st=60 and the replacment framework to be downloaded on the french site http://dl.free.fr/dqkAfTaOJ solved all my issues provided by this unsane Security Update 2012-001. I only replaced the defective folder "ImageIO.framework" found in "/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices\.framework/Versions/A/Framework s" in the Finder and fixed permissions. MS Office 2004, RagTime, 4th-Dimension and so on are now working seamlessly again.

Happy weekend to all and a lot of thanks to all, who helped finding this solution!

Thanks!

I was luck to detect the OPEN problem with Excel before updating our 2nd Mac as well - so I has easy access to the intact ImageIO.framework folder. Fixed permissions --- ans OK!

Apple MUST offer a fix really soon! They must be flooded with FORCED QUIT notes from the affected applications.

Re: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/ ImageIO.framework/

...

I had said : "But strangely, the folder and contents look identical here in my re-installed system, and in a copy saved that was "updated"."

However, upon closer examination, I do indeed see differences in some file dates and sizes. Kudos to the Nebraska folks.

I submitted a bug report to apple complaining that this is still on the Software Update server, and still being offered by Software Update.

(Heaven help all the users who allowed their machines to download and run updates automatically. The completely unsophisticated ones are going to have to turn off their macs and return to their Windows 98 machines to get their software to work.)

after Security update 2012-001 cannot save any Office 2004 file
