after Security update 2012-001 cannot save any Office 2004 file

I installed the Office 2012-001 Security Update on a MacBook Pro running Macos 10.6.8

After that, I opened an attached Excel file from an email (received with Entourage), I performed some formula changes and wanted to save the document with a different name. I saw some changes to the screen as if the File saving Window would appear, but instead the whole program crashed. I could not perform any further changes to the file, basically all of the menus were blank, including the Quit menu. I had to Force quit the program. I thought it was only Excel, but Word also behaves the same. I am able to open any Office file with the corresponding Pages-Numbers program and save the file in the appropriate Office format, but I cannot perform any changes using the Office programs. I am writing this question here on the Apple Support Communities because I am almost sure that this behavior happened after I installed the Security Update 2012-001. After reading some of the latest support questions, I performed a Permissions repair on the StartUp disk but nothing changed.

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Typically in the past, it took about 24 hours for the latest updates that Software Update lists to show up in support.apple.com/downloads/. Maybe this was to reduce the load on Apple's servers to manageable levels, but that's just a guess.

Another guess is now that Apple's new, supersized server farm is online, the interval will be shorter. One can hope.

I believe that this update from Apple should work. If you experience any issues, make sure to post them here and let me know, or let me know via educate-it.org. We released a new build of our installer package that contains more frameworks tied to the previous Rosetta break. Apple's should be based on our initial release so I am expecting some e-mails over the weekend that it didn't resolve all of the issues, but only time will tell. I would say run it and see if it works. I tested it on my MacBook Air and FileMaker Pro 7 opened right up and didn't crash on me so I would guess that it's working correctly.

I started this discussion not realizing how messy it was going to be. I had not commented on the various responses because I was returning from overseas. I guess I missed all of the "fun". At any rate, I first tried to substitute the

/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/I mageIO.framework/

folder with a previous copy (before my overseas trip) from a TM backup. I also had a SuperDuper backup so I was not too worried. It worked perfectly. I opened, changed and saved many Excel and Word documents with no problem. I also printed a Word document. I also tried a very old program called Master'sMate which was certainly using Rosetta. It worked perfectly and printed a document. Since I am still an Apple believer..., I then proceeded to install the new version of the Security Update 2012-001 v1.1 . Again I was able to perform all of the tasks, chores, saves, etc... as before. I would assume that, as Mr. Morris said before, the new Security Update works fine and solves the previously created mess.

I have been a Macintosh fanatic since, at least, 1983. This issue, of installing an update recommended by Apple, and finding that that update actually damaged my computer, was certainly an eye opener. I had complete faith on whatever Apple would recommend. I guess that, as usual, many of us had to learn the hard way. Fortunately, I did have many backups which saved the day. But, obviously, somebody at Apple did not do its job. After reading what the Security Update was supposed to do I would assume it helped all of us from getting other, more serious, problems from people who really don't care about our computers and so, I am still grateful to Apple. But this problem should have been caught by the people who write these Updates.

Thanks to all of you who contributed to this discussion with solutions and very interesting comments about Apple.

To add my experiences for those still looking for validation of the 1.1 update: I, too, gratefully restored the suggested image io.framework folder from a previous system state and had immediate success restoring printing capabilities to my PowerPC apps. After the update fix was released, I held my breath and decided to install it. This time it worked and nothing was altered. I can still print from all the previously "broken" apps. Now the real question is, why couldn't Apple have released the 1.1 update to begin with and saved all of us this wasted day of grief?!

Howdy,

Daniel,

Do you have any thoughts on if or how the v1.1 update addresses the vulnerabilities in the ImageIO.framework (path: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/ ImageIO.framework/) that the original version of the update apparently fixed, causing the Rosetta problems?

The original version of the details about the security update (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5130) apparently listed three vulnerabilities related to the old version of the 10.6.x ImageIO.framework. The article now lists just two, & a fix for them is only available for Lion.

Both patches seem to involve resources (& vulnerabilities) in the ImageIO.framework provided by outside sources (libtiff & libpng). HT5130 provides a link to the libpng home page, which explains the vulnerability (& may explain why older apps were broken by the update) but all I can find for libtiff is http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2011-1167, confirming the vulnerability.
